Want to reduce global warming? Start with your plate.

Did you know that producing just 2.2 pounds of beef burns enough energy to light a 100-watt bulb for nearly 20 days? You may be surprised to learn that livestock accounts for an astounding 18 percent of all greenhouse gas emissions!

At the CarbonfreeDC "Global Warming: Why Meat Matters" workshop on April 29, you'll learn how your diet contributes to global warming and how you can reduce your impact even without going meat-less.

Nathan Fiala, author of the Scientific American article, "The Greenhouse Hamburger" will keynote the workshop, sharing his extensive research on the subject.

Please join us! Vegetarians and steak lovers are welcome. Note: this meeting will be held at Timberlakes Restaurant. Please spend at least $8 so CarbonfreeDC can avoid being charged for using the room.

Some interesting facts:

  • 1 pound of beef produces 13 times as much CO2 as a pound of chicken -- and 57 times more than a pound of potatoes
  • if every American reduced their meat consumption by 20%, it would lower energy demand as if everyone switched from driving a Camry to a Prius
  • producing the annual beef diet of the average American emits as much greenhouse gas as a car driven more than 1,800 miles
  • industrial meat production relies heavily on fossil fuels through fertilizer manufacturing and global transport
  • on average, Americans eat 3 times more than meat the average person globally

A fantastic presentation by a knowledgeable expert. Nathan distilled his scientific research into layman's terms that we can start to apply immediately.

The speaker and his presentation were amazing. I have been quoting his statistics to friends like crazy. I like the message that if you consider yourself "green" cutting down on meat is as important as recycling, using public transportation and using renewable energy.

The content was great and the audience participated. But, the venue was horrible. The acoustics and menu were horrendous.
  • Gaby
So good to hear directly from such a knowledgeable person who was willing to answer so many questions. Thanks for arranging this!
