What should new players buy first?

When starting to play Warhammer Invasion it can feel like you have a lot of catching up to do with the all the sets and with no league draft play there is no clear way to ease into the game. This article is a guide for beginners on how to get the best bang for your buck and start enjoying the fun that comes from the deck building side of the game.

The beauty of the LCG format, at least compared to CCGs, is they are not nearly as taxing on your wallet.

Once you really get a feel for the game and are ready to sink your teeth in you can get started with fairly competitive decks for less than $100.

Since we are talking about starting the game on a budget hear, I will be talking about Amazon. I am all for supporting your favorite local game store(especially since BluegrassMagic GameShop gives us up to 25% through their loyalty programs with us), but I know people buy from both, so I will give both prices and let you decide where your conscious leads you.

Here is what I would recommend to buy if you are new to the game:

  • Warhammer Invasion Core Set

This is the foundation on which the game is built. it has 4 of the 6 races, Empire, Chaos, Dwarves, and Orcs. You can ignore everything else I say, but you really need to buy this.

    Amazon: $28
    FLGS: $40
    BGM loyalty price: $30

  • Assault on Ulthuan Deluxe Expansion

This set adds 2 races, High Elves and Dark Elves as well as some very essential cards for the other 4 races.

    Amazon: $20
    FLGS: $30
    BGM loyalty price: $22.50

  • March of the Damned Deluxe Expansion

This set adds 2 neutral races, Lizardmen and Undead as well as some really essential cards for all races.

    Amazon: $23
    FLGS: $30
    BGM loyalty price: $22.50

  • Legends Deluxe Expansion

This set adds a new card type, Legend. This is the latest set and it seems legends will now be a staple in every good deck. This also has some pretty good cards for the other races including neutral ones.

    Amazon: $26
    FLGS: $30
    BGM loyalty price: $22.50

Total:
Amazon: $97
FLGS: $130
BGM loyalty price: $97.50

This may seem a little steep, but compared to a box of Magic for $85 this is a steal. Buying this will give you 8 races worth of cards to build 3-4 okay decks to play around with which is pretty good.

Buying this will give you a solid foundation to slowly build from with battle packs. Getting the sets in this order isn't set in stone(except core set) and I don't know anyone that ran out and bought the things listed above at one time, but when looking at what you need to buy this is the best place to start.
