CareerFocus - Career advice from Chicago Professionals Pages

At CareerFocus, you'll meet others in the Chicago area interested in developing the skills and attitude necessary for career advancement, and professionals who are interested in sharing their professional knowledge and strengthening the local Chicago business community. You'll be able to share career development tips, strategies and advice - or just socialize with Chicago business professionals!

Format: We usually have one set meeting a month with occasional social events. Any members who have ideas can send the information to the organizer.

Each CareerFocus meeting will include a short presentation on a particular occupation or industry by a local Chicago professional and a moderated question and answer session, and will end with breakouts that encourage individual and group discussions.

Who should join the group?
Professional Administrative and Executive Assistants, and Entry-level Career Professionals who are interested in learning from local area professionals about a particular career path or how to navigate their career. Each meeting will focus on a particular career occupation in these industries and business functions.

Industries: Corporate Law, Finance, Banking, Insurance, Client-support, Consulting, Business Services, Media, and Not-for-profit.

Functions: Administration, Legal support, Client support, Financial Sales support and Analysis, Corporate Communications, Marketing/Advertising, Human Resources, and other corporate functions.

Industry-leaders will be invited to join to present to our members.

What we're like:
The consummate professional - very calm in demeanor, welcoming to new members, open to humor and open to new experiences. We're humble, sincere, respectful and civil. We enjoy learning from others and appreciate the time and commitment our speakers pledge to help improve the Chicago business community. Civility is a basic requirement to participate in the group. This has enabled us to avoid member troubles. Please don't attend if you cannot act in a professional manner.

Who should not join?
Those who are not interested in developing their skills, capabilities and career goals. We reserve the right to remove or deny any members who we feel are disruptive to the group.

What we're not:

  • A singles dating group. If this is your prime motivation for attending - don't show up - there are other groups better serving your interests.

  • A group for you to impress: If your lack of self confidence evidences itself in an oversized ego, or if you delight in domination or intimidation of other people you may also want to go somewhere else - pretentious people simply need not apply here...

  • A happy hour bar group - While we do get together fairly frequently to socialize at a pub or nightclub - drinking isn't the focus - many members don't even drink - so if downing shots is your passion - some of the other nightlife MeetUp groups may also be better suited to your interests...

  • A business development / network marketing group: No sales pitches allowed. Don't try handing out literature... There are better groups for this...

How do we keep this focus with a group that allows anyone to join?
Actually, the core group is very good at self policing. Aberrant or simply bad behavior is not welcome. If an individual's behavior becomes the focus of a meeting rather than the topic at hand, the group will ask an offending individual to correct the behavior or move on to other groups. While this is not a perfect solution - it does seem to be working quite well.

We expect and maintain a professional environment. There is no long admittance interview, but remember that if you do exhibit antisocial behavior - not limited to those listed above, you will be removed from the group.

How many members are in the group?
Because interests in the individual CareerFocus meetings vary, group membership is diverse and may extend beyond the number who attend individual meetings.

Where are the meetups held?
Our group meetings are graciously hosted by AltaStaff at their downtown office:

AltaStaff - a boutique staffing agency
53 W. Jackson Blvd, Suite 1028, Chicago, IL 60604

Social events may be scheduled at various locations in the Chicago Area.

When are the events?
We schedule at least one event per month and will send a reminder one week before a scheduled event.

How does the RSVP system work?
Please only RSVP "yes" for events if you are sure you can attend. A "yes" RSVP should be treated like any other commitment you would make. If you told your friend you were going to meet her at a park, you would let her know if something came up and you couldn't make it.

Please provide the same courtesy to your friends here. It is very disappointing to attend an event that had a large number of "yes" RSVPs only to see a few actually show up! So please change your RSVP with as much notice if possible. Members who "no-show" on a "yes" rsvp more than 3 times are subject to removal.

Is there a fee to be part of the group?
The CareerFocus program is supported by our sponsors and hosted by AltaStaff. It is offered free of charge for all attendees.
