Let's go to Dr Sketchy's together!

Dr Sketchy is a burlesque figure drawing group (think Toulouse Lautrec at the Moulin Rouge!) which started out in New York and has now caught on in London.

Their next event is 2 - 5pm Sunday 24 June. Go to their website to book - tickets are £8.50
I think you have to book EARLY as it's popular!

Just book you're own ticket and we can see each other there (RSVP here too so we can see who's going).

Best, Frankie

    •  Fun, friendly atmosphere, good compere. Half drawing, half entertainment. Personally I tend to be in focused 'work' mood for drawing so I found the frequent entertainment breaks a bit distracting. The suggestion of drawing with your left hand, was good for loosening up. Great for people to find encouragement, inspiration and tips. Really good turn out from the group, but lots of people had things to do afterwards so we dashed off afterwards.

Mixed bag but overall pretty good. One hour of basic warm ups (drawing with the left hand, drawing blind etc..) was too much for me and I couldn't care less about the "situation" drawings ("pretend Millie Dollar is in jail with Paris Hilton"...). This reminded me of the art school feel I wanted to escape. There are 3 kind of crowd in those events. The ones who want to learn how to draw, the ones who want to meet people, the ones who just want to be entertained and the ones like me who just want to sketch so it is difficult to please everyone. I didn't come to be taught how to draw so this bothered me a bit especially when the warms ups takes over the free sketching time. I think I only got 15 to 20 drawings in 3 hours when we normally do between 30 to 40 in our regular 2 hours meetups. Other than that I have met some nice and talented people which I didn't know before hand. Millie the model was/is a stunning and had great costumes and routines. The host was really entertaining
    •  I felt it was competitive and intense, although there were some good moments. Not very sociable, as people kept to their clicks or partners. These kind of events do not suit loners like me who is still trying to find out where his golden touch lies. Unfortunately my friends are not into art. I will continue to search for events that bring out the best in me, but I don't think these sketch-ups do, they're for the pro. Perhaps a two-parter animation storyboard meet-up, where in Part 1, attenders draw a simple storyboard, then go home, put it into a very, very simple 15-second animation, and in Part 2 (say two or three weeks later), bring their lap-tops with their simple animations, and share with everyone. I don't know... I'm still exploring myself... and what's possible - a bit like cartoons!
