CHEW Series #12 - Steady/Moderate/Brisk/Strenuous

IMPORTANT NOTICE TO ALL RIDERS AND RIDE LEADERS ATTENDING CHEW 12.

-------------------------------------- new message
CHEW participants, if you are planning to join us for CHEW #12, please note the following:

- EARLY RIDE START: Please check in by 7:45 a.m. at the ride start in West Seattle. All paces will depart promptly at 8:00 a.m. for the ferry. Please arrive early.

- FERRY FEE: To make payment and loading to the ferry easier, riders are asked to pay $6.10 (EXACT CHANGE ONLY) to their ride leaders when they check in at the start location. The ride leader will give you a colored card to hand the ferry worker as we board the ferry. This will be your “ticket” onto the boat!

- WAIVERS: To expedite the check in process, please fill out an online waiver.Cascade has created a very short, simple electronic waiver form that you may fill out online instead of filling it out the morning of the ride. You will still need to check in with your pace group ride leader that morning, however, to confirm your attendance and pay for your ferry ticket. The traditional waiver form will also be at the ride start for those that are unable to fill out an online waiver.

- ONLINE WAIVER INSTRUCTIONS: To fill out an online waiver, do the following before 3:00 p.m. on Friday, 3/28:

- Visit www.cascade.org and sign in (or create a free account, if you do not already have one).
- Once you have signed in, go to the calendar (www.cascade.org/calendar) and find the CHEW #12 ride listings on March 30.
- Click on your desired pace group steady (yellow), moderate (green), brisk (both blue and orange), or strenuous (both white and purple).
- On the page for that pace group, click on the “register” button at the top of the page, fill in the blanks and click on “save registration.” You’re all done!  If you are unable to come on the ride, no worries. The registration is meant to expedite the waiver sign in at the ride start.

- FERRY PROTOCOL: Please follow the directions from your ride leaders and the ferry workers. Bikes must be walked down the ferry ramp onto the boat. Secure your bike with ropes or along the rails, or else lay them down in the area designated by the ferry workers. Exposed cleats are not allowed in the boat cabin.  For the return ferry from Vashon to Fauntleroy, stage you and your bike IN FRONT of lane 1 (so in front of the cars). Lane 1 is closest to the rightmost side of the dock along the railing. There is no fee for the return sailing.

- WEATHER: We will try to make a call by 6:45 a.m.  on 3/30 if the ride needs to be cancelled due to inclement weather. We will post a notice to this Meetup site if we are cancelling the ride.

Thank you for your help as we work to streamline the check in process for this event!

-------------------------------------- end new message

The CHEW Series will be held Sundays on January 5, 12, 19, 26, Feb 2, 9, 16, March 2, 9, 16, 23, and 30 at various starting points on the east side. These will be climbing routes on local hills which will progress from ~ 30 miles and 2500’ of elevation gain to 50+ miles and 4500’ elevation gain. There will be four paces offered -- steady (12-14 on flats), moderate (14-16 on flats), brisk minus and brisk plus (16-18 on flats), and strenuous (19-20 on flats). All pace groups will use a common route each week.

Please RSVP to Meetup for ride updates and to help us determine the appropriate number of ride leaders. Plan to arrive at least 15 minutes prior to the start to hear the route briefing, safety presentation, and sign the waiver form for an on-time departure.

Riders should be able to sustain the appropriate pace for their selected group, know how to read a cue sheet, change a flat tire (and have the requisite equipment to do so) and have a positive attitude. Ride Leaders and Sweeps will not stop long for flats or mechanical issues due to group safety.

Faster riders are welcome to join but for them the ride becomes self-guided. Riders can ride on their own, in smaller groups, or with the appropriate Ride Leader.

A limited number of cue sheets will be available at the ride start so please print your own just in case. The final route and cue sheet will be available on Meetup.com the weekend prior to each ride. Rest stops will be planned as noted on the route cue sheet.

A good headlight and taillight are recommended. Fenders are highly encouraged -- without them you may be asked to ride at the back of your pace group as a courtesy to the other riders.

Regroup policy: This is a training series so we will ride with the best interest of the group in mind. We will regroup at the top of hills for a reasonable amount of time as well as at major turns. Stops will be brief. Riders may need to fall back to a slower pace group if they fall behind. If you are riding in the last pace group, the ride leaders will make sure you have a cue sheet and feel comfortable to finish the ride or will stay with you as need be. We want everyone to ride hard but to have fun and get back safely.

Please print your contact information clearly on the waiver form in case we need to reach you for any reason.

Here are some specifics for this route:

CUE SHEET Link

ROUTE: Route

COST: $6.10 for passenger/bike ticket (Bring EXACT change)

PARKING:
Park in the North Lot of Lincoln Park or on the northbound side of Fauntleroy (be aware if time limits are posted) and bike down to the South Lot to check in by 7:45.

START LOCATION: Meet no later than 7:45 a.m. in the South Lot of Lincoln Park (closest to the ferry dock and across from SW Cloverdale Street). Do not park in this lot (time restricted). To make payment and loading to the ferry easier, riders are asked to pay $6.10 (EXACT CHANGE ONLY) to their ride leaders when they sign in. A group payment will then be made to Washington State Ferries. You will be issued a group ticket by your ride leader to board the ferry. We will depart en mass (in pace group order) for the ferry line at 8:00 a.m. sharp, so please arrive early to sign the waiver and pay for your ticket. Late arrivals may not enter the group holding area on the dock once we have departed the Lincoln Park parking lot.

REST STOPS: At mile 26.2 (Park: water, no food) and Mile 36.5 (Grocery, Coffee Shop, Bakery)

BATHROOMS at START: Available on the ferry dock and on the ferry.

REMINDERS: Exposed cleats not allowed inside ferry cabin. Please do not ride your bike from the dock onto the ferry. We will depart the ferry on the Vashon side in pace group order and use the parking lot on 103rd to stage our departures for the ride. There is no fee for the return ferry. Vashon is very bike friendly but it does have curvy, hilly roads. Please ride mainly single file and take care to not block access ways while visiting the grocery store and coffee shops in town. Have fun enjoying the splendor of this island!

Great ride today everyone! Thanks for coming out for our finale ride. Special thanks to Cathy for her very hard work in making this happen for us. I hope to see everyone for CHEW '2015. Until then, I hope you can join us for the CATS rides.

I echo the kudos to Alexa for all of the hard work she put in to make this series a success! Look forward to all of the "CHEW re-do's" over the summer!

Yes! Alexa and team! Thank you so much for organizing these rides! It was so great to participate without having to do all the work! Thank you so much for all that effort!

So sad I had to miss todays ride, on call for work and just couldn't chance it glad you all had good weather though

    2 · March 30, 2014

    • Cathy H.

It felt weird not to have you there for the final ride, Tim.

      1 · March 30, 2014

    • Tim T.

Cannot wait to be retired so work won't get in the way of fun! On call sucks. Worst part is no calls on Sunday so had I risked riding I would have been ok. If course then I would be tired and the call at 3 AM this morning would have been even worse. Oh well no more until mid May.

Thank you Cathy and all the ride leaders for a wonderful ride on Vashon!!

Cathy, what a great route! I was cursing to myself on a few of the hills but you most assuredly did your research to challenge us all. I was glad I was able to ride in 4 of the last 5 CHEW rides and appreciated making some new friends out there on the road during this series. Thanks to all who organized and led.

    One word - EPIC.

That was a fantastic CHEW series. Huge thanks to Alexa for putting it all together, Ride Directors for putting together fantastic routes and to the Ride Leaders for keeping it all together on the day. Additional thanks to all the riders that came out to ride with us, as without you this series would not happen. Looking forward to CHEW 2015..

Just to let you all know with my recent travels I missed out on the CHEW #11 so will be scheduling a ride in the coming weeks..so if you missed out you get a chance to ride it again (Brisk paced).

Now looking forward to the Eastside CATS and MEETS Marymoor :-)

What a perfect way to finish off a great series. Thanks again to Alexa and all the ride leaders for their hard work, introducing us to nearly every hill in the region, and pulling it off without a hitch. You have made so many bikers happy, and reminded us of what a great community this is. Hope to see you all on the roads again soon.

STUPENDOUS series, Alexa. Can't thank you enough for the huge number of hours you spent to make CHEW such a roaring success. Wonderful and dedicated ride leaders and riders made for a really great time. Thanks to everyone that came out to Vashon today! RLs, thanks, too, for being willing to step out into new territory for the final ride. I know it makes the leading significantly more challenging ... and everyone made it back on the boat! Success!

It was so much fun! And we couldn't have had a better weather today! It was still bit too chilly (and not wanting to carry my shed jacket) to sport my CHEW jersey, but close! :-)

I'll be driving over before the 6:30 a.m. call on whether we ride but there's no rain coming down in Renton right now. Of course, it looks like it will later. I just hope the weather's more reasonable than my ride yesterday. :)

Hey all -- Just a reminder to help us out this Sunday by registering for the ride through the Cascade website. I just did and it is so easy. Just think...no need to sign a paper waiver at the ride start!

My daughter Holli is not a fan of "crazy rides" but she is going anyway out of a sense of obligation to her father... the last time I rode around Vashon Island was 30 years ago, and then I was 19 and on a motorcycle!

Hey All: Check back on this site Sunday morning after 6:30 a.m. for update if the ride is cancelled. If it is just showers, as predicted, we'll ride (wear full fenders). I just uploaded a revised cue sheet and route link. No change to route, just a few more route clarifications embedded. Bailout options are noted throughout in case weather does not cooperate. Town is never very far away if your pace group bails and wants to eat in town. PLEASE BE ADVISED THIS IS RURAL RIDING. WATCH YOUR SPEED. RETAIN SPACE.. LOTS OF POTHOLES ON THE ROUTE. See you Sunday!

If it rains, folks will not get to see my new bike. I think we should hire some anti-rain dancers for this one.
