CHEW Series 2.10.13 Ride - Steady/Moderate/Brisk - 40 miles (3465')

The fifth ride of the CHEW Series (see below) will be held on Feb 10, 2013, start location and time noted above. Please see draft route url for route details. Ride leaders for this week are:

Brisk – Frieder Mack
Moderate – Kimberly Smith
Steady – Al Miller

Draft route for this week is: http://ridewithgps.com/routes/965198

Climbing Hills – Eastside Wintertime – The CHEW Series will be held Sundays at 0930 on Jan 13, 20, 27, Feb 3, 10, 17, March 3, March 10, March 17, and March 24 at various starting points on the East Side. These will be climbing routes on local hills which will progress from circa 30 miles and 2500 feet of elevation to 50+ miles and 4500 feet of elevation. There will be three paces offered for riders – Brisk (16-18 mph on flats); Moderate (14-16 mph on flats); and Steady (12-14 mph on flats) which will all use a common course for that week. Each ride pace for the week will also be posted at Cascade Bicycle Club Daily Rides Calendar (http://www.cascade.org/EandR/Activities_Calendar.cfm?query=cascadefreedailyride)

Riders should be able to sustain the appropriate pace for their selected group, read a cue sheet, change a flat (and have the requisite equipment), and have a positive attitude! Faster riders and better climbers are welcome to join but for them the ride becomes self-paced and self-guided. Riders can ride on their own, in small groups, or with the appropriate pace ride leader. Cue sheets will be available at the start and riders can email the Ride Leader by the preceding Friday noon for the final route cue sheet pdf and map url. Rest Stops will be planned as noted on the Route Cue Sheet.

We ended up with 57 total riders for a great winter day of riding some seriously good hills! The riders showed extraordinary Positive Mental Attitude for meeting the elevation and pitch challenges! Excellent ride! Should be another fun one next week!

Thank you to everyone! It was a great ride, and I know I'm getting stronger.

Great ride today. Huge thanks to Val for being Mr Motivator on the final hill climb. My legs were wiped out towards the end but I managed to keep up with the group. It only gets easier they say.

No worries. Glad you could join us for today's ride. As the saying goes, "Suffer now, or suffer later" - suffering now will reap rewards on whatever organized ride you have as a goal. Remember, all rides are "relatively flat with a few bumps along the way!"

I felt a bit fool hardy signing up for this ride because I am still early in my training this season, but I had to see if I could do it. I am so glad I went! It was hard work but I had a great time. Very supportive leaders. What a great crowd! Looking forward to future rides! Thank you!

I am interested in doing this ride but this will be my first climbing ride of the season, do you regroup at top of hill?

    February 7, 2013

    • Anne-Gigi C.

Al, thanks for your advice. I will add a bit of climbing to my ride on Sat and see how I feel. I will say yes for now and if I don't feel up to it, I will change my reply on Saturday.

FYI for anyone else reading this thread - the brisk group does regroup, albeit less frequently than the other paces. (I'll defer to one of the moderate ride leaders to comment on their policy.)

Just a gentle reminder. As we continue to increase distance and elevation, it's important to hydrate and refuel. From this ride forward, it becomes more important to replace electrolytes (Nuun, Accelerade, Cytomax, etc...) and to refuel using high-energy, easy to digest foods (shot blocks, bananas, gel packs, etc...) during the ride to avoid bonking. Everyone is different and what works for one person may cause adverse reactions in another. These rides are probably not the ideal time to try something for the first time. :)

    See you all Sunday!

The last few weeks I (and Scott) have had a lot of left over cue sheets that were not apparently needed - if you would like paper copies of the cue sheets please let us know asap so we can provide those for you - but we don't want to keep on using up trees etc for no real purpose. Thanks in advance! The cue sheet is electronically posted under Files for this rides as CHEW 5 etc - this link might also work - http://files.meetup.com/3386582/CHEW%205%20Hill_Climbing_East_-_Local_Faves_-_10_Feb_2013.pdf You can also download the route electronically to your garmin (or equivalent maybe) from the ridewithgps link at http://ridewithgps.com/routes/965198 See you Sunday!! Bring your positive mental attitude for the hills!

Al, a worthy discussion topic for tomorrow - braking on the downhills - especially using the front brake. What do you think?

      Oops. Wrong "tomorrow"....

Do I need to email someone about this or can I just show up?

    February 2, 2013

    • Al M.

You can just show up to ride! If we get an RSVP (via meetup) it helps us plan for extra ride leaders if necessary. This is a fun hilly route with some "pitchy" hills.
