Getting Ready to Ride: Week Six – Juanita (Kirkland) – Rose Hill Loop

Are you planning on riding in your first STP or RSVP but aren’t sure if you are “ready” to start training in the Cascade Training Series (CTS) or in the Daily Rides programs? Or are you trying to fulfill a New Year’s Resolution to do more Daily Rides but aren’t sure if you are ready to jump in and start riding with the Daily Rides? If either of these situations (or perhaps another one) describes you, then you may want to consider joining one or more of our Getting Ready Rides Series. This series will be held on 6 Saturdays starting at 11:30 am at various East Side locations.

We will hold our sixth (and final!) Getting Ready to Ride event on Saturday 16 March 2013 which will leave from Juanita Beach Park (Kirkland, WA - http://goo.gl/maps/c8c95) at 11:30 am. Our sixth ride will be circa 26 miles and will go up Market Hill and Rose Hill and the side of Inglewood/Finn Hill – these are scenic riding areas by Lake Washington and by Bridle Trails Park as well as great training for early season riding. Rides will be conducted at two paces and you can select the pace that best fits for you – A Leisurely paced group (10-12 mph on the flats, aka The “Red” group in CTS) and a Steady paced group (12-14 mph on the flats, aka The “Yellow” group in CTS).

The route map is at http://ridewithgps.com/routes/1985134. Printed cue sheets will be available at the start and can be obtained electronically by Friday noon prior to the ride from the Ride Leader. Please plan to arrive by 11:15 so we can process the ride waiver, do equipment checks, and discuss the route. We anticipate the ride will last 2.5-3 hours depending on how the day goes. We will also discuss group interest in related skills for riding such as tire changing, the ABC checks for riding, simple bike upkeep, etc. Please consult the Cascade Bicycle Club Daily Rides web page for information for riders (http://www.cascade.org/EandR/rides_newcomer_instruction.cfm) as helmets and so forth are required for the ride. Scheduled ride dates are 9 Feb, 16 Feb, 23 Feb, 2 Mar, 9 Mar, and 16 March. Each ride will have a different starting point as posted on the Cascade Daily Rides calendar page (http://www.cascade.org/EandR/Activities_Calendar.cfm?query=cascadefreedailyride ) and under the Cascade Free Daily Rides subgroup of meetup.com (http://www.meetup.com/cascaderides/).

So, what's next? How do I keep this habit going?

Pick your favorite ride of the six, get out your Strava app and then see if you can best your last time. :+).

Thanks for the Strava tip Windsor! It's look like a fun app for tracking progress toward fitness goals.

Great riding on Saturday - despite the rain, the wind, the cold, the riding was fine once we got started. Proving again that the first step is always the hardest! Thanks to all the folks who came out - even though we expected this ride would have a little less attendance, still we had 61 riders! A super turnout on such a day!

Good route, with longish not-too-steep hills.
I'm glad we were carrying tools (that's what's in my trunk), because we were left to our own devices, when trouble struck... twice.

A great ride. Thanks Tim & Scott. Thank you Al & all the volunteers for organizing these fun events.

Tim and Scott did a nice job of getting the group through intersections where the lights were short.

I agree - nice route. However, I thought there were just as many hills on the second half, but then this is my first ride - ever!

The good news is - they have cancelled the 520 bridge closure due to weather. The bad news is - they have cancelled the 520 bridge closure due to weather. Good thing we aren't made of sugar!

Jen - thanks for flagging this - I also just noted that they canceled the bridge closure due to inclement weather - doesn't seem any more inclement than any other spring in Seattle!! Ride on!

I am available to lead a faster ride.

    March 15, 2013

    • Al M.

Fred - I think we have a baseline strategy for the Yellow+ group this week as we have Tim Thomas and Alexa already lined up - but maybe we'll get even more riders than planned (we can hope!)! There is some other Cascade events occurring on Sat which might reduce the attendance a little - if we get a lot of sun (I can always dream can't I?) then we usually get a few more riders to come out and join us!

Cue sheets are posted now for the Saturday ride on 16 Mar 2013 - http://files.meetup.com/3386582/06_Winter_Getting_Ready_Kirkland_Redmond_Bothell_16_Mar_2013.pdf

Ride route is up now. We'll push the cue sheet up hopefully today to the Files section when I get any last minute inputs from the other ride leaders. The route is looking pretty good!! Let's hope the weather cooperates (but we'll try to ride even in there is a little rain!)

There is the high possibility of significant volumes of green beer flowing in downtown Kirkland after the Kirkland Shamrock 5K this Saturday! The 5K run will be over (we talked to the organizers) but there could still be quite a bit of residual congestion. Allyson and I have elected to do a re-route (still leaving from Juanita Beach Park at 1130) using one of her routes to account for that and to avoid any issues with the 520 construction which also continues. We should have the revised route up tomorrow evening. And, yes, we will have a Yellow+ paced group again this week! Woot!! And, we'll do a push email on Friday reminding everyone that the 520 bridge is closed this weekend and to allow extra time if necessary to get to the start.

    2 · March 11, 2013

  • Allyson W.

Just a heads up - 520 is closed this weekend so leave some extra time to get to the start!

Anyone want to carpool from Seattle?

    March 4, 2013

    • Christie W.

Hi Peggy. I would love to. I live right off of Mercer by Lake Union. I have a bike carrier that can hold 3 bikes.

      1 · March 4, 2013

    • Peggy

That's great, Christie! I see you are also signed up for week 5? Do you want to carpool for that one too? We could take turns driving, as I have a carrier that holds two bikes
