Dear Kristen:
I lost my Cavalier in May, so now I have 2 Shih Tzu.  I just wanted to tell you I really appreciate the trainer referral, as I have a problem with my latest rescue, Molly, who is just a year old.  When she came to me she was the most docile, sweet little girl I've ever met.  Not a bit of aggression in her.  And then about a month ago she was attacked in a park.  My 2 were on leashes, and they were nose-to-nose with a terrier mix when the terrier when after Molly with no warning.  Molly's ear was torn, requiring 4 stitches, and ever since that day she has been fearful of any approaching dogs.  She lunges and barks, and that encourages my other dog, Mitzi, to do the same.  I had never even heard Molly bark until that day.

I plan to contact Mr. De Luca, as he sounds like he could be the answer to my prayer.  Thanks so much.

Also, I have to tell you, your description of finding Pesto sleeping on the dining room table made me laugh!
Sincerely,
Susan Burke

We have a baby due in January, so I'm afraid we cannot take on another cav.  BUT I wanted to encourage you all with the story of my cavalier, Pesto, who is a reformed pain in the butt/aggressive cavalier.

Pesto has always been a bit mischievous and stubburn, so we put him in a training class.  The class is one that I would NOT recommend, since they used pinch collars and lots of harsh, negative reinforcement techniques.  Not the right training for such a gentle breed, right?  Live and learn!

The class made him worse and worse, and he became very protective over food and treats and toys, to the point where he would attack our other dog on a regular basis for no apparent reason.  He even bit my hand once (not breaking the skin, but it was sooo shocking and scary to me.)  I couldn't believe that our sweet cavalier had become such a terror.

Then we hired Tom De Luca, our lifesaver.  His business is Paw Lite.  I highly recommend him for anyone whose pups have an aggressive streak or just overall lack of respect for authority.  Tom's training seems like just the thing for Freddy.  I am confident that after 7-10 sessions with Tom, Freddy will be remarkably better!  Dogs are often aggressive because they are scared or anxious.  With Tom's simple tips, we completely changed the atmosphere of our home to one of calm, where we were the authorities.  He never even directly addressed the aggression issue during our sessions, just worked with us on general principles of establishing authority in our household. Within weeks, Pesto had stopped attacking our other dog and we could take him to dog parks again.  It's been over a year since he has snapped or growled aggressively.

My guess with Freddy is that his aggression built little by little, just like with Pesto.  I really believe that a one-on-one in home trainer could knock out those behaviors pretty quickly.  So please, if anyone has the urge to take Freddy in, I would highly recommend a trainer like Tom, or someone who knows dog psychology very well.  The trainer at the most recent Darcy  FunDay seems right in line with that type of training.  I unfortunately can't remember her name.  Anyone?

Thanks for reading!  Just wanted to brag that Pesto is now one of the sweetest Cavaliers ever. He comes to some of the Cavalier events and does quite well. He's still mischievous and stubborn though.  And still a pain in the butt :)  I think that's his personality.  I caught him sleeping on the dining room table the other day.  haha

Warmly,
Kristin

Too bad he's such a grump.  He's a very handsome boy.  Sorry I can't help you out, but wish you the best findind a suitable foster situation for him.

The Cavalier Rescue Group has contacted me. We have a Cavalier, Freddy, who is a resource guarder, if you know that term. He may be insecure, he may be just aggressive - it's hard to tell. We need to find a foster house that can take him and work with him. Note, Freddy gives ample notice of his irritation. This might be situational behavior but it's bad behavior nonetheless and we need to be careful in selecting a foster.

If you are interested in finding out more and possibly fostering Freddy, please contact Deborah Anders at Cavalier Rescue USA, her number is[masked] 0116.

Thanks,

Sandy Darone
