Re: [cavalierspaniel-48] Abscess near Anal gland

Dear Angelo,

Morgan, my 9 and 1/2 year old cavalier girl had a similar thing happen to her about 5 years ago - one of her anal sacs burst after forming a an abscess.  I don't know how large hers was, because I didn't notice it before it burst. The vet told me that sometimes, this can happen. She was given antibiotics and I applied a cold compress for a week or so. She recovered very quickly.

She never had it happen again. The only thing I was advised to do was to check the glands regularly on vet visits and during grooming and she is doing just fine. I was told that some dogs can sometimes have things get a little too thick back there to expel it naturally and this is what can happen. It is scary and she sure did let out a yelp when it happened. My poor girl was actually sleeping above my head on my bed when it did so....yeah...that was fun....for both of us. ;-)

So in my experience, its something completely manageable and I don't think it is Cavalier specific. Morgan has also, thankfully, never had seizures and I don't believe the two issues are linked.

I hope Lilly feels better very soon and I bet she will!

:-)

Just rushed my Cav Lilly to the Emergency vet (Atlantic Vet on Vets Hwy) because a golf ball size abscess showed up out of nowhere over night. En route it burst. Luckily she was wrapped in a towel. The vet knows her because we have had to bring her there before said it was an abscess involving her anal gland & although they will do everything they can, they cannot guarantee it wont come back. Antibiotics, flush & then stitches. Is this common in Cavs? Has anyone had a similar situation (anal gland or abscess' or both)? I will say this, right out of the gate, they asked if she has had seizures.

Thanks ,
Angelo
