Re: [cavalierspaniel-48] Night Barking - Help!!!

We went through a similar issue with our 2 year old cavalier waking us up at night. Our good friend recommended Gabriel Riesco. He is dog behavioralist based in Brooklyn. He came over to evaluate her and his methods really helped. We were able to get her back on a regular sleeping schedule within a few nights. Here is his yelp page in case you are still in need of help. Good Luck!

Best,

Heather

When I had that problem- Romeo awakening at an ungodly hour- called his breeder...She said to put sheet/blanket over crate like some have mentioned here. Also how about a sound machine right by his crate? That helped me tremendously. Also, I'd move his crate into your bedroom, sheet on the crate & lights out for you at the same time.

By any chance , is he spending alot of time in his crate during day when you are out?

You say he only piddles a little when you take him out at night. You might want to get a urine specimen & have vet run a urinalysis.

He's trying to tell you something.

Plus you can always call your breeder for input.

Good luck.

I crate trained my Cavalier and she is going to be 10 in October.

I've had to crate her now and again and there were a few occasions where she would have a little tantrum.

I found that putting her crate in a place where she couldn't see me (opposite of what many here have said) and only giving her a stern "NO" and then leaving her be worked well.

Also, having water readily available to her in the crate is very important.

I do need to say though that I never crate trained my 2 cavs they have slept with me from day two. I used the techniques below for my cattle dog and they worked well which may say something about the difference in breeds.

Ali is right:-) and you should put an article of our clothing like PJS or something soft like a sweatshirt so he can snuggle and know you are near and make sure it's really comfortable and cozy in the crate.    Additionally , covering the crate with a sheet, towel means it's bedtime. Hope this helps!  Monika

I snuggle with Digby every night... Put the crate next to your bed and make sure it's cozy for him?

Hello Group -

My 6 month old cavalier, Ryker, has hit some new phase and to be frank, it's driving me nuts. Since his very first day at home at 9 weeks old, he's always been so docile and happy to be in his crate at night. Never had any problems before. About 2 weeks ago he woke me up with barking at about 12:30pm and then again at 4pm. Each time I took him outside to pee but he barely even needed to go. Now it's become a regular thing for him to start barking 30 mins after he goes into the crate and he pretty much doesn't stop until the next morning. I'm actually afraid of getting kicked out of my apt because others must be hearing it. Not sure what to do here but I'd love some advice as I need my sleep and not sure how much longer I can handle this. Sleeping with me on the bed is not an option. I'd rather not get into  the habit.

Thanks
Dan
