Introducing "NSO Kids!"

  • Needs a date

  • Needs a location

  • As the father of 14, 7, and 6 year old children, I am often missing events that I cannot attend because my children would not be able to participate and I have no one to watch them. Instead, we go to the park, or just mull around the house. NO MORE.

Introducing a new program, NSO KIDS!

Aimed primarily at children or families with children between 5-15 year of age, NSO is planning to schedule a series of kid friendly events that are in line with our outdoor philosophies.

This event is a call to action by other "home bound" parents who would like to get up and get out with their children. To be eligible to participate, children must have at least one dues paying parent or guardian or be the guest of a dues paying member. Children will not pay dues themselves.

I would like to set up a planning session for the implementation of NSO Kids and welcome all parents and children who can to attend a brainstorming session to kick off this project.

Some examples of NSO kids events would be:
Scaled down versions of our other activities such as 20 foot rappelling, backpacking over a 2-3 mile trail, caving in flat, short, dry caves. Other events would include short hikes, car-side camping trips, fishing trips, trips to local parks and swimming holes. We may even do some 2, 3, or 5 day summer camp style events that would incorporate numerous events and even some over-night events. These could include knot-tying lessons. Lessons on how to start a fire, use a compass, identify types of flora and fauna, etc. These are just a few of my ideas.

If you are interested in participating in this brainstorming session, please RSVP and if there are enough interested parties to make this happen, I will schedule a date for the meeting.

    Hope to see you there.

Any progress on this idea? Although it may be a "subsidiary" of NSO, you'll likely get more exposure if you start a new MeepUp group specifically for "NSO Kids", since folks out there searching for groups to include kids will then find it more readily. Then, you could also post summary updates to NSO-proper (or do "joint meetups between NSO and NSO Kids") to keep others in NSO informed.

PLEASE let me know when you are going to move forward on this. I would love to be involved or even a co-organizer if you need one. One of the main reasons I have not been able to do much with NSO is because of child-care issues, etc. So, I think it's a great opportunity to expose the kids to NSO-type activities while also, selfishly, getting to do them myself.

    Feel free to contact me!

I don't think I am going to open a new meetup group because of the associated costs. I am already using all 3 of my included accounts. But I certainly could use organizational help. I have already posted a couple of NSO kids events. But you should also know that children are welcome at just about any event short of longer hikes or tougher caves. I bring my 6 and 7 year old on many events. Even if it doesn't SAY NSO kids, you are welcome to bring them along.

Has anything happened further with this idea? Will there be a separate "MeetUp" group or just events embedded into regular NSO?

Would still be great to have other "adults" join the events to set the example of outdoor fun for the kids (mentors). The bonus is that you can spend a day with some kids...but they aren't yours to take home at the end of the trip. Ha.

If anyone is interested, I'd thought of taking my boys to Sugar Hollow in Bristol tomorrow to mountain bike some of their single track trails. We rode there last week after a rain and it was a blast! I'd love to see this idea take off; my sons are very active and love to hike, mountain bike, kayak, frisbee golf, catch crayfish............anything that involves dirt and adventure!

I started the group because there wasn't any other type of group like this. I've met some great folks in the group who have become close friends and have also met some amazing business owners.
