Hike the Channels of VA, the trail is called Brumley Mountain Trail

This is a 5.7 mile round trip hike, however, there are other small hikes that can be done in the area but main attractions along the brumley Mtn trail are very scenic overlooks, fire tower visit, and the famous sandstone channels section. Trying to see the fall colors. This will be day hike as camping is not permitted there.

I can hike now only I can wear any backpack yet on my shoulder. I was wondering how hard of a trail is this? Can someone call me and is anyone from Kingsport going?? Can I get ride if I go??[masked] I still have to be careful

    October 25, 2013

    • Brent D.

Does anyone else on here know to answer? Patty I can't say because I've never been previously lol but the terrain map doesn't look too bad

      October 25, 2013

    • Melissa B.

It's not a "hard trail" by any means. it is a long uphill pull from the parking area on an old rd bed. clear/wide easy.
Once in the "Channels' just make sure ya got space to get between the rocks.
      It's totally doable..
      enjoy it!

  • mary g.

I have hiked it 2 x. It's very limited on parking and you don't see any signage until after you park the car and get close to the gate. It's a nice "road" with a gradual rise to the fire tower. Down in the channels it 'a sometimes steep. You will have a fun hike.

Was looking at the weather. In Saltville, temperature will be around 40 deg. I think we'll be about 2000 ft higher than that altitude, so it could possibly be below freezing. Bundle up...

Starting at the eastern end of the trail (hayter's gap Rd at raven ridge), the channels are a little less than 3 mi from the trailhead.

What's the plan? Meet at the trailhead at 9 on Saturday?

    October 15, 2013

    • Michael J.

Yeah, that's weird. I downloaded the Google kml file so I could check it out. From what I can tell, and I hope this is right, it's a total length of 14 miles, and the channels look to be 10 miles from the western trailhead. From the east, 3 miles. Those 3 miles are like a 7% grade, so should be interesting. I think the firetower is at the junction where you turn off to go to the channels. This is also the peak of Middle Know, which I guess is the high point. Looks nice from the pictures. The description on the link you sent over also says that the turnoff into the channels is at the firetower, and it seems to be pretty well marked. I didn't see anything about closures during rain. Should be good regardless.

The linked trail guide says there's a 5.9-mile option. If we're day hiking, is this the better choice? I think 10 miles and then driving home for an hour and a half would be awful.

    1 · October 2, 2013

    • Michael J.

Idk, it says the first 3 MI are the best views and involve traversing a lot of canyons, etc.

      1 · October 2, 2013

    • Brent D.

That's what I'm looking for lol

      October 2, 2013

  • Tosha

Melissa, you recently hiked this trail. What is your take on the hike? Are you familiar with the alternate trail?

    October 2, 2013

    • Michael J.

Is it an alternate trail, or just further down the same one?

      October 2, 2013

    • Tosha

The one you mentioned lol. The shorter option.

      October 2, 2013

  • Kristy

Maybe there needs to be 2 hikes for this one? One for the ones that have no problem hiking 10 miles and a shorter one for others who don't want to to do the full 10 miles.

    2 · October 2, 2013

    • Brent D.

Not a bad idea.. especially if tthe two trails start same place. Whatcha think Tosha, Melissa, and Aaron??

      1 · October 2, 2013

  • Administrator

I would like to see this as an overnight. I am RSVPd as Aaron. I can't do 10 miles in a single day. What does everyone else think?

    October 1, 2013

    • Tosha

Please see Christy's comments below. There aren't any camping places currently.

      October 1, 2013

    • Brent D.

Ohh yeah that's right.. she checked and they don't allow camping there

      October 1, 2013

  • Jacob R.

I've hiked the Channels fairly recently. There's another trailhead that's up in Hayters Gap that's a much more direct route, nowhere near 10 miles. When we did it it was maybe 5 hours round trip, with slowish hikers. The parking lot is easy to miss and somewhat small, so consolidate cars if you can. The path was clear and graveled most of the way to the top. Also is there gonna be an admin there? I need to pay my dues.

    September 25, 2013

  • Kristy

Hey guys, there's no camping allowed on this one so it would have to be a hike in and out. 10 mi should only take 5-6 hrs for even the slowest hikers. See http://www.dof.virginia.gov/print/stateforest/Channels-brochure.pdf and http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.aspx?guid=16e02571-df39-48cf-a8e7-87ea05d32b89

Tosha, I'd love to do this one but it's a little too far out to know for certain. I'll rsvp when I know for sure if I can come.

I am trying to be two places at one time. Dang. Gorge Rat weekend is two weekends or the Channels one Sat. I think I can do both actually.. Sat at the Channels hit the Gorge on Sunday.. then go back to the Gorge the weekend after that. I'm a rd tripper type...

      2 · August 21, 2013

  • Jason H.

I had planned on hiking this on Saturday but our plans changed......anxious to try for round 2! I got some good trail info from the Dept. of Forestry rep in that area!

    1 · August 12, 2013

    • Brent D.

Please do share the info lol! Thanks

      August 13, 2013

    • Melissa B.

Oh for sure.. my understanding is this trail officially opened June 2012 so it's kinda hard to locate on a map.

      1 · August 15, 2013

  • Administrator

Please post options for over night hike if you are going to be doing that. Ten miles is too much for a single day except for the most avid hikers. So, what shorter trails are available for the 1 day version? Please update with this info.

    August 13, 2013

    • Brent D.

But I'm good with overnight too lol, or just shorter if we must :)

      August 14, 2013

    • Brent D.

However I think there may be no place to camp there and not really able to avoid the 10 mile hike however...but Tosha and Melissa both are studying it

      August 14, 2013

  • Tosha

Alright so now we need start planning then the details. Would everyone like to just do the channel hike, camp and do other hikes, or lodging?

    August 13, 2013

    • Brent D.

I'm good with either/or...just day trip or overnight camp

      August 13, 2013

    • Administrator

I would love an overnight trip here. Do the whole 10 mile trip in 2 days.

Day hike or backpacking is fine. Is there camping near a trail head so folks can do either?

    August 13, 2013

    • Brent D.

We're trying to figure that out.. hopefully Melissa can help in that question?

      August 13, 2013

I've been doing some research as well... this trail was just dedicated last year so it's not on the National geographic maps.
I walked part of it near Hidden Lake back in May of 2012.. Eastman hiking Club has a good write up:

Maybe you can help on leading the event :)??

We'll really need to plan this well since so many areas there so we have clear plan to which trails and where each trail head is located. I already know where VA hwy 80 is however :)
