River kayaking

Bring your kayaks and lets enjoy a little easy river kayaking. We'll be letting in at the Wilbur Dam and letting out at the park behind the ballfield in Elizabethton. This is a great beginner river kayak trip with a few rapids, none to life threatening. The dam starts to release the water at 1pm for recreational purposes and if we're lucky it will have rained, which makes the water awesome.

This trip ranges from about 2 to 4 hours depending on how fast the water is flowing.

Look forward to see you there.

I will be able to take an extra kayak on Jim's 4Runner if needed. Toni, I will be at Winged Deer Park at noon for the practice run. I am using a tandem sit on top with my 13 year old daughter and neither of us have experience.

I don't have a roof rack, but could strap mine down with rope..I won't be able to meet on Friday night though.

Would you all like to meet at the CPA on Friday around 6 p.m.? I am meeting a friend there and am checking out a kayak for him and can do so for others. Does anyone have room for 2 kayaks on their vehicle? I can only fit one on my car, and I have a friend going who doesn't have roof racks.

I would like to go, but don't have a kayak. I've kayaked before. Jeff, would I be able to get a sitontop kayak from the CPA with yours. I'm not a student, so I'd like to see if I can do that.

    July 16, 2012

  • Jeff B.

Thanks Toni! I checked with the CPA yesterday and there is no limit on the number of kayaks one student can rent as long as they have ones available. If anyone who is not a student needs to rent one, contact me at[masked] and I'll get it with mine. Looking forward to lots of fun on Saturday!!

I've been googling using sit-on top kayaks with rapids, and it appears they work just fine. I also see that Watauga has class 1, 2, and 3 rapids in some areas (I don't know where, tho). Being that I haven't done a wet exit in a while, I think a sit-on top would be better for me. I learned at the CPA that, because they are not open on weekends during the summer, if we pick the kayaks up on Friday and return them on Monday we'll only be charged the one-day fee. I'm in :)

If there is anybody that would like to get more familiar with kayaking before we Hirt the river we can meet at Winged Deer park in Johnson City at noon before we go. That way we can run over some safety and basics to get everybody comfortable. Let me know if there is any interest In that.

Jeff- yeah a sit on will work for this trip. A lot of people enjoy those more on this river because it is a beginner river and a sit on adds a little more fun. I've got friend coming and that's what he prefers.

    July 14, 2012

  • Jeff B.

Hi Toni, I'm brand new to kayaking. Will a sit on top work for this trip? Thanks, Jeff.

    July 13, 2012

  • Toni N.

Watauga kayak in Elizabethton rents kayaks for $30 a day, if you're an experienced whitewater kayaker.

I just called the CPA to rent a kayak for next weekend (thanks for looking into that, Jeff). It appears they only have sit-on tops for one person, along with the tandems that Jeff mentioned. I'm going to keep looking around for a kayak that's not a sit-on top. If I find one, I'll plan on going.

My phone number is[masked] if anybody has any questions. I'll be glad to try and help.

Hi everybody. I checked with outdoor recreation today through the CPA on campus and students can rent a kayak for $15/day, $25/weekend, $45/week. Tandems rent for $25/day, $45/weekend, $75/week. They come with paddles, lifejackets, and a helmet.
