Internet Safety

“You joined a group on the Internet? How can that possibly be safe?”

The following information was taken from a thread post in the Meetup Message Boards regarding Internet safety. Please read it carefully as I hope all of you will feel safe attending events in this group or any other group.

The following is a “Safety Note” Meetup support sends out:

We want all our members to be responsible and feel safe using the Meetup site and at their Meetups. Here are a few basic tips for anyone planning to meet with online acquaintances in the real world for the first time:

* Don't put any contact information in your profile, emails, or message posts, including email addresses, instant messenger nicknames, personal URLs, personal homepages, etc. Take advantage of anonymity until you've met with your group and feel comfortable.

* When you go to your first Meetup, bring a friend or friends.

* If you can't bring a friend, let one of them know where you're going, who you're meeting with, and establish a time when you'll call them after the Meetup to check in.

* Only attend Meetups held in public places. After you get to know your group, then consider going to Meetups at private locations.

* Always trust your instincts. If you don't feel comfortable, there's a reason.

**Please note: Meetup takes no responsibility for the goings-on of group meetings in the real world. If you have a problem with a member on the Meetup site (i.e. via message board or email), contact Meetup customer service at If you have a problem with a member at an actual Meetup in the physical world, call the police.

Be courteous, be kind, and most of all, be safe.

Have a Great Meetup!
