Let's explore the Wincopin Trails in Savage Park!

Please read through this whole description.

Time for a big walk in the woods, let's hike the Wincopin Trail in Savage Park. It's really beautiful and feels far removed from civilization even though it's so close to Columbia. The trails are wide and well-marked, and consists of several loops throughout the park.  We will do the Red Trail today, a gentle hilly area with a nice bathing pool in the river for the dogs.  It is still full of rocks and roots.

The Green Trail  is about 2.2 miles, and takes about 1.25 hours to complete.  The red trail is just over a mile and takes about an hour.  They go through a leaf covered path, which is not paved, nor stroller friendly.  Here is a map of the trail for those that are unfamiliar or would like to check out the area. We will plan to make a stop so the dogs can take a break and have a little water fun in the river in warm weather.

Please bring water for yourself and your dog.  Come EARLY as the parking lot fills up fast.  Street parking is legal.

There are some elevation changes, which for some may be challenging. There are several steep hills in the Green Trail, and one in the Red Trail which are nice fanny burners. Wear sneakers or hiking shoes as it can get muddy in some areas.   If you wear sneakers, please be sure that there is plenty of tread on them. Please be advised this is not a stroller friendly walk if considering to come with small children.

Also, this trail is the most STRENUOUS trail we hike with this group.  It is full of jagged stones and roots hidden under leaves, and it has a few very steep inclines.  If you have BALANCE issues, are afraid of  HEIGHTS, or tend to trip and fall easily, please consider joining us on a different walk.  RATED S for STRENUOUS.

Please bring a six foot FIXED LENGTH LEASH for your dogs, for their safety and for ours.

There are some interesting old ruins of bridges and dams that you'll see along the trail, and they are good vantage points for beautiful views of the river.

The parking lot for the Wincopin trails of Savage Park is located on Vollmerhausen Road, a short distance downhill from the Patuxent Valley Middle School. If you're using a GPS, you can get there by entering: 9271 Vollmerhausen Road, Jessup MD.

From the Columbia area: Take 29S to 32E, then exit off onto Broken land Parkway. Take a left onto Guilford Rd, a right onto Murrary Hill Rd and left onto Vollmerhasuen Rd. Slow down after the bridge on Vollmerhausen and the rail fence.  Parking lot is fairly OBSCURE, on the right.  A nice scenic backroad trip, just gorgeous on nice days.

Please plan to arrive early to allow the dogs time to sniff and form their pack.  Also, getting there early will allow you to find a parking place.
