Ok, so Genivieve and Monique were asking us to recommend good Scottish authors and novels for them. Here's some of the ones we mentioned, but feel free to add more.
Nigel Trantner: Campbell reminded us of this guy. He wrote very good historical novels, on many different parts of Scottish history. Ian Rankin: Edinburgh based novelist, famed for his Inspector Rebus novels. Good detective fiction, where Edinburgh herself plays a leading role. Irvine Welsh: Not for the uninitiated in Scottish vernacular. Author of Trainspotting, written phonetically with a strong east coast accent, he has a slew of other novels and short stories on various parts of the underbelly of modern Scotland. Can't recommend him enough. John Buchan: Wrote the 39 steps, and other classics. Has strong Canadian links. James Hogg: Wrote the "Confessions of a justified sinner". A must for anyone with an interest in Scottish literature. Other Scottish authors who don't necessarily write about Scotland: Iain Banks: Under this name, he writes fiction (like the Crow Road, great book), and under the pen name Iain M Banks, he writes science fiction (really good stuff). Angus Bell: Author of Batting on the Bosphorous. Great book, very funny. There's also Alexander McCall Smith. I'm not a fan, but he seems to be doing well enough for himself. Who's your favourite?
