Secret Lake Reminder!

From: Alan
Sent on: Wednesday, November 14, 2007 10:52 PM
Drummers,

This is a friendly reminder that tomorrow is Thursday (that's right, another week has passed, already) and that means that the Secret Lake Drum Circle is fast approaching (i.e. tomorrow night!).  We need some improved attendance from last week, and I have faith that we can improve by leaps and bounds (i.e. even myself plus another would literally = a 100% improvement!).  Seriously though, I plan on making the hour drive again, but if anyone else coming could respond to the event it would help in deciding/planning.  Alright, good night and I look forward to meeting some of you tomorrow!

Cheers,
Alan

Thinking the circle was Thursday rather than Friday, I wondered around the Dandelion for an hour looking for everybody before getting a bite to eat and taking off.  I haven?t attended this circle yet but from what I saw, I totally dig the venue? the vibe from the cafe is on the same wavelength as the Drum Circle Culture and being in a more central position in respect to this area, it seems to be a much more practical location for an Orlando based rendezvous.  Once again, I haven?t actually attended an event here so am not really qualified to speak on its behalf but it seems that noise is going to be a constant problem considering there are residential apartments right behind the caf?.  Im not a big fan of drumming on pavement either but am totally willing to live with this if the people around there are cool with us jamin.  I also hear its at least getting attendance which is usually the principal difficulty in sustaining gatherings.

Tony:  There are a lot of woods and lakes around here but the biggest problem is none of these areas are really in a ?central? location in respect to Orlando .  This is probably one of the reasons why circles on the east coast are more successful as the beach provides a perfect atmosphere and realistic geographic location (density wise) to hold gatherings.  Starting at 417 for our East Orlando point of origin, we want to get closest to downtown as possible for designating the most sensible demographic meetup.  The drawback with sticking to this criteria is that the closest we get to the city, the less we can expect finding the preferred ?nature-inspired? atmosphere to hold circles.  I?ve investigated places since being involved with the community? Most if not all the parks close at sundown and then there?s always trying to find a place large enough (that?s not in the middle of nowhere) where we wouldn?t draw negative attention.  It looks like a lot of traffic for the Circle culture will come in and out of the Dandelion so Im pretty optimistic with this venue as a networking hub if nothing else. It would be nice if there was a little plot with grass and trees so it wouldn?t seem like we were playing in a concrete city but its hard getting everything.

I totally understand where you?re coming from in regards to really wanting to break on through with some serious beats.  Many of the subtleties get lost over the net but I don?t think anybody took offense. We all understand that attending just to hang out and show your support is better than not attending at all.  The rhythm will eventually come.  Anyways, Im definitely gonna mark my calendar for the next new moon and hopefully get the chance to jam out with some of you.

Peace, Erik

Hello Alan,

My name is Tony and have been part of the Full Moon and djembe workshop drumming circles in Miami and Fort Lauderdale since back in 2001. I've been wanting to join up with other "serious" drummers around central Florida and it has been difficult.

I've gone to the drumming at the Dandelion twice. The 1st time it was GREAT! The 2nd Full Moon drumming was aweful! Please don't get me wrong, but when I make the time to drive anywhere of some distance to play my Djembe, I want to PLAY! and with others who at least give a good effort to play together as a group should. I was saddened to look around, and everyone was just looking at eachother, just hangingout like just another day, also to have to stop playing at 10:00PM, well that probably more than any other reason is why it doesn't get going. Down south the serious drumming doesn't get moving until after 10PM and we can play for 2 to 3 hours straight from there.

Where are the serious drummers!?

I've been a member for a few months now on this forum and read everything, and this is the first time I feel that I needed to say something.

Drummers are here, but (not to exclude anyone) real drummers don't want to waste their time with those who just want to hangout.

Now I love to "hangout" but this is about drumming 1 a month!!

It would be great to gather in a central location, in the woods, or around a lake, or some cool property where there are no time contraints. I think that's key.

I haven't been to the " Secret Lake " location only because I'm in Ocoee and I will not drive such a distance only to be dissapointed by the lack of participants.

I'm willing to help in anyway to make something happen just let me know.

Much Peace and Love,

Tony Salvetti

Michael & Other Drummers,

Hi, once again my name is Alan and I was the one who sent the email about being new to this forum and being the only one @ last Thursday nights drum circle (I believe that's what started this whole discussion).  While I am a newbie to the group and have yet to participate in any of these events I am bummed @ the lack of participation these events are currently seeing.  As a note, I planned on attending yesterday's Monday night djembe class, but it too was cancelled due to poor attendance.

As I mentioned in a previous email, I recently relocated from the DC metro area where I unfortunately had to leave behind a performing drum and dance group I had assembled.  It was a mixed cultured group mostly centered around african drum and dance.  I am definitely missing the opportunity to drum and meet the good people that cultural drumming attracts.  I really hope that we can rejuvinate some of these gatherings, and I will gladly volunteer myself, my instruments, and some of my time to help coordinate or lead this Thursday night event if that is what's needed to keep it alive.

Thanks for the inputs and feedback from those of you who have filled me in on the current status of things.

Best Regards,

Alan

Subject: Secret Lake Organizer ?

Your Organizer, Michael, sent the following message to some members of The Central Florida / Orlando Drum Circle Community Meetup:
----------------------------------------------------------------
Hello everyone,
It has come to my attention that Justin is no longer organzing the Secret Lake drum circles on Thursday night. Apparently Justin has moved away to Tennessee . I have not heard from Justin in many months and over this same period the Thursday night circle has been getting worse and worse as far as attendance goes anyways. I know this was the original event that got the Meetup group started, but without a strong organizer and active local crowd, it does the community at large no good to continue the posts on the public calandar.

So with this I'm asking for your help. Is anyone interested in taking on the responsibility of organizing Thursday nights at Secret Lake ? If so, great let me know and we'll throw it to the group for a vote. And if no one is interested, we'll simply remove the Thursday night events off the calandar as a regular event.

Thanks for your help,
Michael
