I am saddened to report the following sexual harrassment incident regarding Ali Baba's Restaurant - see info sent by 1 of their longstanding professional performers below. Please boycott this place!
Also, please boycott Relax Grille at Lake Eola. I've tried time & time again to collect on the gift certificates Sam has promised for the July show 4 of A MAGI professional dancers performed including A MAGI class dancers too. His last excuse for not meeting up with us to complete the transaction was that he was too drunk & couldn't drive (to meet us)! He said he would call me, but never got a phone call. How unprofessional! I think it's obvious he has no intention of paying. I & my dancers have spent more time & $ trying to collect what was promised & owed to us that frankly, it's not worth it! So, therefore, I urge a boycott of this place. Screw em.
There are too many instances of dancers performing for free, undercutting, dancing only for tips. This is damaging our profession! I know of 1 area company who always performs for free! That's so not cool & again, damages our profession. Sure we do community events for gratis, but when it comes to nightclubs, restaurants, lounges, bars & private parties - they're making $$ on you & you should be making some $$ too! Minimum usually is $40 per 20 minutes for solo show - minimum, private parties much more!
It seems as though there are many areas dancers & drummers who do not understand that there are professionals in this field & if you are not getting paid for your services time & time again, you are showing how much you are worth - nothing! Luckily I & my troupe have established that we will do community events for gratis, but at bars, nightclubs, restaurants, lounges & other venues where the owners are making $$ off of your shows, you too should be paid. I hope in other cases, there is money being exchanged. If not, please do not patronize such venues, events & performers! Enough is enough! Some are performing for free all the time at venues who are raking in the dough! At some point, they must realize that it damages our profession - period!
Please note that I am in the process of developing a forum entitled: P.E.A.C.E. (Professional Ethics Art Culture Entertainment). I hope that all area dancers & drummers will become a part of this forum. Let's talk about how we can maintain ethics & professionalism & get paid for our professionalism & services!
Here's the Ali Baba incident letter:
This is a Public Service Announcement to allin the Orlando area - please feel free to forward this message:
We have now experienced, on mulitple occassions, outrageously unacceptable treatment of - and conduct toward - dancers by new management at Ali Baba Restaurant in Longwood. We are asking ALL dancers to communicate to everyone in the belly dance community to:
BE AWARE of this activity and to please join us in sending a clear message this is not allowed in AMERICA by refusing to conduct business with this establishment.
We have cases of dancers blatantly propositioned with threat of losing their pay/employment, and we have dancers who were 'released' for not responding to unwanted advances.
This activity is not only a blatant violation of professional ethics and integrity, it is a blatant violation of criminal laws. Remember, the definition of Sexual Assualt is:
"Sexual assault and abuse is any type of sexual activity that you do not agree to. Sexual assault can be verbal, visual, or anything that forces a person to join in unwanted sexual contact or attention." see: www.womenshealth.gov
If you know of any dancers who have obliged these demands, please tell them: this is illegal, there is help available.
If you know of a dancer who makes a personal and cognisant choice to engage in this behavior, then please tell them to stop creating situations where the rest of us have to continually fight for our collective reputations!! And at the very least be smart enough to go someplace where you will get PAID for what you're willing to do!
Please share with any and all dancers in the Orlando area.
