We had a great turn-out for the House Ethics Committee Hearing Thursday. Just want to let you know that your attendance, your phone calls and emails did not go unnoticed by the House committee members.

The subject was TRANSPARENCY IN THE STATE LEGISLATURE, and Ashley Landess did a terrific job of speaking in favor of more transparency and
making the Legislature more accountable to WE THE PEOPLE of SOUTH CAROLINA, with suggestions such as:

1. Make Legislators subject to the Freedom of Information Act.
2. Don't allow Legislators the excuse of disciplining themselves through their own ethics committees  --  fox guarding the henhouse.  Drop those committees and make them accountable to the State Ethics Committee.
3. Shorten Legislative Sessions  (ours is said to be one of the longest sessions in the nation)
4. Restore judicial independence (judicial branch appointments now controlled by 3 legislators)
5. Require all Legislators to report income sources to expose any conflict of interest
6. Enforce State law that requires an open budget process.
7. Open the secretive incentive process

Many folks think Legislators should operate from their districts.  The longer they are here, the more mischief they get into. The more they can be influenced by lobbyists who otherwise would have to do a lot of traveling from district to district. Better that constituents can reach legislators in their districts.

There will be another hearing on November 28th at 1 PM

so if you were not able to make Thursday's meeting, plan to attend the next one (look for info and updates in this group)

In the meantime, it would be a good idea to contact members of the committee and also our own State Rep just to reinforce our position on these issues and to

Let them know WE ARE EXPECTING RESULTS from these hearings -- not just show-hearings with no action taken

If we want change we have to get in their faces!!!
