SCIENTIFIC EXAMINATION OF RELIGION

Scientific Examination of Religion—Sunday, January 31, 6:00 pm, Center for Inquiry Indiana, 350 Canal Walk, Suite A, Indianapolis. Topic: A History of Heresy: Part I. The focus will be on the meaning of the word heresy, how one comes to be regarded as a heretic, the many early opinions and views of the early Christians who were some of the first heretics . This is the first in a series of discussions of heresy. The concentration will be mostly on Christian heresies but one program will be devoted in Islam. The discussion will focus on how heresies have worked as a force in the evolution of both religions. Sean O'Brien is the discusion leader for this group.

    Tim,
This is a discussion I've been hosting for several years on the topic of religion. The group name was suggested several years ago by Reba.

As to your comments on the recent discussion, I would like to know more about just what it was that you expected. I welcome your feedback, but if you have anything to offer worth taking seriously, you are going to have to contribute more than fustian disapproval.

We were disappointed. The name - Scientific Examination of Religion - implied the program would offer a critical, scientific analysis of religion; but the discussion did not conform to any qualitative or quantitative methodology. Instead, the discussion was a highly opinionated summary of historical events that did not conform to any historiographical methodology; nor did the discussion delve into the sociological causes. Hopefully the discussion leader will be better prepared next time.
