Café Inquiry (Grand Rapids)

Café Inquiry is a casual event starting with a short 10-15 minute introduction of the day's topic followed by open discussion. At 11:15 we will break for coffee/brunch and a chance to socialize.

Visit the CFI Michigan Event Calendar for upcoming topics.

Members are welcome to propose and schedule a topic which would be of interest toward establishing a secular society based on science, reason, freedom of inquiry, and humanist values. Please contact Geoffrey Saint if you have a topic that you would like to discuss at an upcoming Café Inquiry.

    Show Topic:
America's Civil Religion: The Faith Of The People, By The People and For The People
In 1797, the Founding Fathers declared with the Treaty of Tripoli that "the United States of America is not, in any sense, founded on the Christian religion," yet references to God and faith can be found through the Nation's Civil sphere, even in the Declaration of Independence. Was it mere pandering, or is there something more to the religion of the United States. Join us for a discussion on Religion, the State, and what a "God-Fearing American" is.
