METRO MONTHLY–“Talking Across Cultures” w/ Dr. Tetyana Sydorenko

Our regular monthly Meeting! Presentation followed by a community party with dinner and drinks. Child care provided during the presentation.

This Month: “Talking Across Cultures” w/ Dr. Tetyana Sydorenko

Last month, we discussed the basics of how Americans talk to each other, but an even meatier issue is how to talk to people from other cultures and backgrounds, whether speaking to someone from another country or even from a different culture within the United States. Dr. Sydorenko will discuss what some of the challenges are for non-native or bilingual speakers in the United States, as well as some of the challenges for Americans when communicating with people who may have vastly different backgrounds.

The Oslo Lounge has a bar, so you can have beer, wine and cocktails with dinner.  This is also an opportunity to connect with others in the community, get updated on our activism and what’s going on in the community, talk to Advisory Board members and give input.

Child care will be provided in a separate room. We are working on an actual program of stories, games, lessons and critical thinking activities to present to children of different ages. If you are interested in getting involved with this effort, please contact any of the organizers of this meetup event.

Volunteers will provide the food! We now have a team of volunteers who will cook a hearty meal for everyone. We we just ask that you help our volunteers pay for the ingredients by making a donation of $ 5.00 per adult meal so that our volunteers can buy ingredients. Children eat free.

7:00 pm:  Welcome and announcements
7:10 pm:  Presentation and Q&A
8:00 pm:  Children join the adults for a potluck dinner, discussion and socializing

There is a parking lot on the west side, right next to the Norse Hall, where we have limited parking.  Street parking is also available.

We won't be able to be there but an audio/video presentation would be most welcome! Please let us know how we can obtain this.

So sorry to miss this one as intercultural communications are an interest of mine but we will be galavanting and not in Portland. Will anyone record this?

Dr. Sydorenko has graciously provided us with a copy of the presentation, including audio and video accompaniment (which we did not have at the event, due to technical issues). Anybody who would like a copy of the presentation, just let me know!
