Willamette Kayak Adventure - no experience necessary

Adventure With Lisa

Men of age object too much, consult too long, adventure too little, and repent too soon...

                                                                                                    Francis Bacon

Don't be THAT guy or girl; join us for a little bit of challenge and a whole lot of fun. First-time kayakers and experienced paddlers alike will enjoy a unique perspective of Portland on this guided tour circumnavigating Ross Island on the Willamette River.  We'll paddle past an impressive blue heron rookery and possibly see bald eagles and osprey as we glide by Oaks Bottom Wildlife Refuge.  There is an unparalleled view of Portland's skyline on our way back to the dock.

Instruction and all equipment included.

Thanks to Lane, our wordsmith, Mr. Bacon retains his gender appropriate spelling.

Kathy, you did tell me they are given enough money for food. I love the idea that they have to budget. I so didn't mean to imply they go hungry. The purpose of the consequences is clear to me. I'm very impressed with how comprehensive the planning is. They will be that much stronger for their homeland bc of it. My friend Ken is printing photos for them. Yay

You calling me a wuss? :-) And just ask Gilligan what can happen on "a three hour tour, a three hour tour"! No, I had tons of fun, and I'm not knocking you, Lisa, you do so much for the group on these. Thanks so much! I just heard some yearning for carbs, etc., by the end, and figured it might be avoidable in the future.

Hi Dave, sorry you did not know it was a three hour tour. There is always so much information that should get posted, but just not enough time. I so hope people understand that since we are doing so many different things, I won't have opportunities to get it right. I did ask people to bring water as it is a three hour tour several times. I'm glad you had fun. And dude, you were in a kayak with another paddler. I will work to make sure everyone knows the score for the treetop event. Thanks.

In hindsight, if this is repeated (one can only hope!), would be nice if prep suggestions, and maybe route and/or length, could be published in advance. It was sort of challenging even with a quart of water and some carbs on board, and many attendees had less. (And sorry about confusing Venezuela and Nicaragua!)

So, boxes of framed photos will be appropriate to the mission and will be cherished by family and friends. I've gotten permission to send a few extra things in the boxes and will ask the kids what they would like to have sent home. Thanks so much for supporting this project. If SHayla, Loksie, and Emerson come to other events as planned, we will have a good variety of photos. Please do email me with photos when you can. THANKS!

I'm hoping to get the SEED kids into the treetop obstacle course for $10 ea. The plan for sending boxes to their families has been honed. The program they are in has very strict rules about what could be seen as charity. It's a terrific system to support them in solving problems and being self-sufficient. They were chosen by their villages to become leaders. So, they are given just enough money for food each month. If they run out, the go hungry. Consequences.

Guides were great! My kids will remember their kayak adventure forever! Warm thanks to Lisa and Rommel and all those who watched over my amazing kids from Haiti and Nicaragua!

I think you're all shortchanging yourselves. We went all the way around Ross Island, right? According to geodistance.com, I got 5.37 miles. (For some reason, I can't save the route for others to see if I got it right.) If anybody posts photos, would appreciate a link.

Thanks for that info Jim. Since that would be a straight shot and we hemmed and hawed, I['m giving myself 3 1/2 and don't try to sway me with reason just bc you are a CFI guy. We rocked that river!! You guys were all so awesome. And the hottest day of the year to be in the water- woohoo! What joy! Thank you for wonderful memories and terrific photos.

I think we covered about 3 miles, by my estimation on google maps.

We had a good time talking to new people today and doing the paddling. But wow, tiring. We boogied out fast because I needed some carbs right away. I hope to see more of the group in the future.

Wow! Just, wow! Will be nice to see some of the pics. Everybody worked/played together, weather almost too hot (but not quite), just right level of exercise, immersed in nature (and our heron friend didn't seem to mind us much at all), river a bit stinky here and there but mostly splendid. Hope we didn't set expectations too high for our visitors from Haiti and Venezuela. Thanks much to Lisa and all involved.

Dave, do you mean that you've already paid and someone else can have your spot? If so I can call a friend who is a poor student who might like to come.

If you are concerned, don't bring it. I have never tipped a kayak, well, except in a swimming pool during a roll class. This is calm water and they are super easy to keep upright. The reason I mentioned rolling mine is bc I am clumsy. I plan to bring my camera or a disposable if I can't get the batteries going.

    August 20, 2011

  • Jim Miller

Are the kayaks flip-overable? We want to bring a camera, but we don't have a waterproof case.

    August 20, 2011

Ok, I just paid for myself and my guest. I may not have properly indicated a guest, so I paid for 1 person and changed the amount to $92. See you all tomorrow.

Portland Kayak gave us a couple day extension. I'll be paying the final bill at 3pm today. So just use the paypal link above on the RSVP page. Thanks!

My girlfriend Andrea and I will likely be coming tomorrow. I'll click the pay link later this afternoon - must dash for the moment. Too late to squeeze us in?

Thanks for the map. It's difficult to tell much from that- for me anyway. There is limited parking. A parking garage is nearby just south of the sushi restaurant and shops and there is less expensive uncovered parking in a lot uphill from the waterfront (Naito Pkwy, I believe). As for meeting, we will be on the dock a few hundred feet from Marina Fish House. Directions for Marina might be more helpful. This is supposed to be the hottest day of the summer so bring sunscreen and my phone number.

My phone couldn't open the link, but Portland Kayak has directions to the meeting place, RiverPlace Marina, on their website: http://www.portlandkayak.com/ma...

Sorry about the confusion. Portland Kayak likes to have 2 guides with 10 or more people. Kurt's numbers were based on who had paid not on who said they were going to pay. I don't see any problems with this event at all. It will be the hottest day of the year so far to make our interaction with the water all the more wonderful. Bring a camera.

Please tell me whether you have paid or not. It looks like we will need to pay in advance for at least 10 people to have 2 guides- which is necessary for safety. Paying will let us know you are serious about showing up. Thanks!!

So, we're meeting at the Portland Kayak office on the Riverfront Marina dock. This is near the floating restaurant. I recommend taking public transit as parking is limited and expensive. You can walk from the streetcar line or the bus mall. You might want a windbreaker or other light jacket, water, sunscreen, and a hat. We must have payment for Portland Kayak so please do send in your check if you have not already. Thanks so much!!

Please note, there are several places to meet at the dock. Please take my phone number with you- [masked]. Also, we need a firm count by Monday. This will be a terrific adventure.

Portland Kayak needs a final count by next week. Sending a check to Kurt in advance would be so appreciated. I'm super excited about this adventure. The guides are professional and accommodating. Please bring a camera to capture the likely photo-op of me rolling the kayak and Lane falling in.

The marina at the waterfront. More info to follow. Lane, I've been the worst at so many things. If I only did what I am good at, I would not have been able to experience so much.
