I spent most of my life as a Christian (Presbyterian Christian = ~10 years; Born-Again Fundamentalist Christian = ~10 years). As an impressionable teenager I totally bought into the Creationist Intelligent design movement. After years of arguing for it, I started investigating my "rock solid evidence" which of course made the whole thing unravel. This prompted a torrent of reading and investigating: The Bible, other religions, philosophy, history, science articles. The more I learned the more it was obvious how wrong evangelical Christianity is and how harmful (micro & macro) it can be. I was thrilled to find that there was a philosophy which provided ethics mandated not by an unprovable untestable supernatural being, but decided upon via rational logic arguments which could be backed up other than with "just cuz".
As a global community we're going to have to start having rational discussions on the different belief systems - - or we're going to tear each other (and the earth) up. I'm glad of the strides secular humanism has made in recent years and hope we can reach out to the rational religious organizations to help them knock sense into their fundamentalist siblings, as well as form a vibrant and organized community of the non-believers.
It's a great group of people with lots of activities. We need to bring science back to America.
