The book I mentioned a couple of times the other night was:
Joshua Fost - If Not God, Then What? Neuroscience, Aesthetics, and the Origins of the Transcendent
His looks at the brain's activity during spiritual experiences and compares that to other activities that produce similar feelings (in particular, hallucinations). It also had some other interesting things like what is beauty and how does that relate to archetypes.
