      It's more confused than that. Many physicists now say that even the molecular scattering idea is incorrect - that what matters is the size of fluctuations in density of the air. That's what I was told, many years ago. But if you go out on the Internet, you'll find that there's still an argument raging over that. And there's at least one crackpot saying that all that stuff is wrong, because... Einstein.

      My view is that the density argument suffers from some of the same problems as the particle idea - both would produce a much wider variation in colors than we see, wouldn't they?
