RE: [brights-281] children's book

If you go to amazon.com and then select Books from the menu at the left, and then Children's Books from a submenu, you can type "evolution" in the Search box. That brings up 3, 679 results (!)--all with book descriptions, publisher reviews, and reader reviews. You can do a search for terms within a lot of the books, as well as see the Table of Contents and read an excerpt, and you can find out such things as the reading level and how many pages in the book.

For example, choosing two books on the first page of hits:

  • The first is a book called Life on Earth, The Story of Evolution

FABULOUS book introducing the evolution of the earth and all its life forms! Perfect for children pre-k through all of the elementary school years (and parents too!). This book mentions Charles Darwin, the Galapagos Islands, survival of the fittest, variation and mutation, extinction, and more. Nice pictures. Highly recommended for homeschoolers.

  • The second is called Dawwin and Evolution for Kids: His Life and Ideas with 21 Activities (For Kids series).

I found this book at the Darwin Exhibit at the American Natural History Museum in New York. It really tells three stories: the life of Charles Darwin, the state of science in his lifetime and all the scientists who were formulating supporting evidence, and the theory of evolution. It treats the subject of religion respectfully, but makes clear the difference between religious faith and science theory. I plan to give it to our elementary and middle school libraries. Every library should have one.

This book is a pleasure to read with our 8yr old son. We haven't completed it as of yet, but it's one of our favorites. The activies are fun for the whole family to take part in. We are a homeschooling family and wanted our son to learn about evolution, and this book does it.

The DK series are wonderful, and on all kinds of topics!  Just go to Amazon.com and search books for DK.  You'll be amazed at how many different things they write about, and they are all beautifully done.

Does anyone have any suggestions for good children's books that introduce the topics of Darwin, evolution or actual history?  I'm not looking for an anti-religious slant, just ones independent from traditional religious or mythological belief.

It's easy to find children's books on the alphabet, on animals, plants & taxonomy, on the human body, on space, on the earth, and on technology.  It's easy to find books based on the bible.  Surprisingly, it's also easy to find children's books based on Greek, Roman, Native American, Asian, "naturalist", or other pagan mythology.  I've found surprisingly few books that attempt to introduce the topics of evolution, geological history, classical history, or post-classical history in an entertaining way for kids.

My kids are 7 and 4 years old.  I realize I should have asked this question at Darwin Day, but it didn't cross my mind because I didn't have my kids with me.
