CFI Ontario's Cafe Skeptique is a fun and fascinating discussion group that focuses on a range of topics within the realm of skepticism such as pseudo-science, alternative medicine, conspiracy theories, etc. It's open to the public and everyone is welcome to join in!
This month's topic:
Anecdote - A Skeptic's Friend, Foe, or Both?
Stories are powerful because they are a short cut to our emotional selves, and as such are very effective in getting a point across. But stories are not proof (and the plural of anecdote is not data) and yet countering someone's tale of seeing a ghost, which proves they exist, is not easy. Can we make better use of anecdote ourselves to promote freethinking ideas and how can we best counter the quick, easy, and wrong soundbite?
Normally held every THIRD Saturday of the month at 5:00 p.m., at Free Times Cafe, 320 College St. just west of Spadina Ave. Exceptions will be posted clearly when they apply.
We are able to host this and many other events of its kind due to memberships and donations given by people just like you. For reasons to join Centre for Inquiry, a full list of membership incentives and membership level options:
