Write Letters to Freethinking Prisoners

[It's on and happening!]

The Freethought Books Project is CFI's response to the abundant religious material and proselytizing found in our prison system. We send freethought books—secular, scientific, non-religious literature—to prisoners who request it, and we are also offering a pen pal program. Over 30 prisoners have requested pen pals so far!

To get this off the ground, we're starting the Freethought Books Project Correspondence Club. Come to SPOT Coffee on MLK Day (a day on, not a day off!) and get paired with a prisoner pen pal (or a few). Letter-writing supplies including pens, stationary, envelopes, and stamps will be provided -- all you need to bring is yourself.

We request that volunteers be freethinkers and identify as agnostic, secular, humanist, atheist, or the like. We are not trying to spread non-belief in prisons—prisoners often write to us saying they don't have any connections to non-religious people, however, so the pen pal program is fulfilling a need for that connection. Questions and comments can be sent to [masked]. Thanks!

If anyone who missed it -- Jeffery or Connor -- would like to be emailed a letter to write/type a response to, we can do that for this week and then meet up in the future!

Also, if there are different times or places you'd like to suggest for future meetups I'm open! The next one will be sometime in February.

Sarah (Our Group Organizer) was very organized and so helpful and informative. Her friend Bill was a pleasure to meet and they made me feel most welcomed and our time together was very productive and well spent and went by to quickly. I look forward to our letter writing responses and for the next time we can meet and enjoy more letter writing to Freethinking Prisoners - The letters that we got to respond to at our gathering , from numerous incarcerated individuals were so well written, poignant, and shed light on how much a group of letter writing Atheists from CFI are needed as an alternative to the Dangerous religious dogma of Christianity and Islamic teachings in the prison system that so many of these letter writers shared that were most unsettling to both them and us as pen-pals looking to address their requests for ,Literature on Atheism, Humanism,Science,Secularism,Skepticism,Reason, Freethought and inquiry.

I may not be able to make it, will head out if I can. Otherwise it'll have to be next time. Very interested in this next step with the Books project.

We will be there at 2! Probably won't stay till 5, so call[masked] if you want to find out if we are still there.

Is this location bad? Got another two cancellations last minute...not sure why.

Sarah-- it's not the location for me, it's the time, and it's just this specific day. I don't have a set schedule for when I can get my car, it's based on when my hubby-man works. Sorry!

Sarah-- I can't make it, an unavoidable change in my schedule. I'm sorry it's short notice-- but if you forward me any starting info, I'll begin a letter. I'll get this going some way or other!

I'm not that knowledgable about the insides of prisons. Can a non pen and paper relationship be set up? Like via Google+? Also, I'm not getting the day off for MLK. Be there in spirit. :)

Bummer! I thought some people might not be off so I knew that could be an issue. In any case, no, Google+ is definitely not an option, but email correspondence is. Michael, if you want to do this I can pair you with someone via email. You can also type and print letters and I can send for you. Talk to me next time you come by!
