  • Announcing...the second meeting of the Freethought Books Project Correspondence Club! Our first meeting, back on Jan 20, generated some interest in letter-writing. We have 5 volunteers who are currently in correspondence with prisoners, and are looking for more.

We will be meeting at SPOT Coffee downtown, on Delaware and Chippewa, to read and write responses. I will also have letters available for new pen pals who want to attend. Stationary and pens will be included -- please bring stamps or a few dollars to throw in to help cover postage costs for the project.

The Freethought Books Project is CFI's response to the abundant religious material and proselytizing found in our prison system. We send freethought books—secular, scientific, non-religious literature—to prisoners who request them, and offer a pen pal program. Over 30 prisoners have requested pen pals so far!

We request that volunteers be freethinkers and identify as agnostic, secular, humanist, atheist, or the like. We are not trying to spread non-belief in prisons—prisoners often write to us saying they don't have any connections to non-religious people, however, so the pen pal program is fulfilling a need for that connection.

With the weather like it is today, I'm canceling our meet up at SPOT. I'm sorry everybody! I just don't know how the roads will be.
