Dvořák & Brahms with Post-Concert Reception

  • Jan 11, 2013 · 7:00 PM
  • This location is shown only to members

Let's celebrate 2013 by joining our friends at CMS as they jump-start the spring season with a program of chamber favorites. CMS co-artistic directors David Finckel and Wu Han are joined by long-time collaborator violinist Philip Setzer for an evening of beloved works by Dvořák and Brahms. (As many of you know, Messrs. Finckel and Setzer are also members of the renowned Emerson String Quartet.)

An early champion of Dvořák, Brahms saw in the younger composer a kindred spirit, and encouraged him throughout his career. Brahms’ brooding E minor cello sonata complements Dvořák’s folk-tinged “Dumky” Trio and the heroic Trio in F minor. Afterwards, you are invited to a casual wine reception to mingle with others in the Rose Studio.

PROGRAM

BRAHMS Sonata No. 1 in E minor for Cello and Piano, Op. 38
DVOŘÁK Trio in E minor for Piano, Violin, and Cello, Op. 90, “Dumky”
DVOŘÁK Trio in F minor for Piano, Violin, and Cello, Op. 65

ARTISTS

Wu Han, piano

Philip Setzer, violin

David Finckel, cello

Fantastic concert and reception afterward. Thanks for arranging that! My favorite was the 1st Dvořák piece (2nd piece).

I liked the Brahms better, and there were some beautiful piano passages. The cello started off a bit weird to me. The poco adagio and last part of Dvořák's second piece was nice, but I must say I prefer his compatriot Smetana (Trio in G minor).

That could explain why the violin did not project well in Alice Tully. It seemed that he was always under-powered relative to the cello.

That's really cool, Ric! Each member of the Emerson owns a Zygmuntowicz (Gene Drucker also owns a Strad). For more on this luthier, check out "The Violin Maker: Finding a Centuries Old Tradition in a Brooklyn Workshop" by John Marchese. It's a fun and quick read! Agree, too, with Daisy about the cello for the Brahms, which I attributed to a combination of factors too lengthy to go into here, but which include where I was seated (right of center while, acoustically, I prefer left of center) relative to the performers.
