Chapel Hill/Durham Book Club

This book club began in 2007 in response to a gap in book clubs in the West side of the Triangle. Since then, many book clubs have emerged (on meetup, and elsewhere). We're still around, and I guess that means something is working. We alternate locations (between Chapel Hill and Durham), and for the most part, meet the last Tuesday of the month. Our four organizers all love this book club, and participate often. We're always looking for new members and fresh ideas in discussion.

What can you expect when you show up to book club:

  • There will be a discussion leader who has come prepared with questions about the book, we push our leaders to bring background information, and questions that target the themes, plots, and underlying meanings in the books we read. Our attempt is to have this more like a college classroom discussion and less like a coffee klatch
  • Our meetings usually last about 1.5 to 2 hours. You're free to leave early if you want, and some of us stay late to chat post meeting
  • We meet in restaurants and bars, and there is some drinking that occurs

What do we expect from you:

  • Read the book, and show up ready to discuss
  • We want you to participate! Let us know what you thought about the book, if you loved it, hated it, why?
  • If you've been a couple times, volunteer to lead discussion
  • Suggest titles for our club - we vote about every three months
