Cloud Atlas (by David Mitchell) book discussion

December pick (2 month read)

Cloud Atlas consists of six nested stories that take the reader from the remote South Pacific in the nineteenth century to a distant, post-apocalyptic future. Each tale is revealed to be a story that is read (or observed) by the main character in the next. The first five stories are interrupted at a key moment. After the sixth story, the other five stories are returned to and closed, in reverse chronological order, and each ends with the main character reading or observing the chronologically previous work in the chain. Eventually, readers end where they started, with Adam Ewing in the nineteenth century South Pacific. Each story contains a document, movie or tradition that also appears in a previous story. It shows how history not only repeats itself, but also connects to people in all time periods and places.

This is a large book and we chose to read it for our December because of the holidays. There will be no official book discussion for the end of December. We will discuss this book at the end of January.

Sorry I missed it- it's grant season at work, which means for another few weeks, I'm stuck at my computer more often than not, unfortunately. I hope you all had a good time!

No worries busy lady. However, if you were interested, we are scouting for a discussion leader for NW. Any interest?

Despite the small group size, there was no shortage of great questions and discussion... To name a few we talked about our favorite protagonist, progression of good/bad human nature, the cycle of history repeating itself, ascent, descent and the recurring number '6' throughout the novel. Thanks for those of you who showed! Looking forward to seeing you all later this month for the book NW by Zadie Smith

I'm really looking forward to discussing the book -- but not really looking forward to driving tonight. Next week, then!

Hey loves, we have had 5 cancellations so far. I think by lunch we need to decide if we need to reschedule due to weather. I will post more information by around 1pm.

      It's probably safest to postpone.

Hi, I agree. I really don't want to drive over there tonight and I really want to be a part of this discussion! Do whatever you think is best. I would hate for people to not know it was postponed and show.

Given the prediction for snow this afternoon and tonight, are there any thoughts of postponing this meeting? I really want to talk about the book but I don't think I'll be able to drive well in the snow.

I don't know if everyone has been able to start reading C.A. yet, but its incredibly good so far. Don't let the style of the 1st story scare you off, it changes ALOT through out. Great recommendation Drew! Any interest in leading the discussion in Jan?

I just finished Cloud Atlas today, I'd love to facilitate discussion! I'll come equipped with questions.

Hey Jaimee, I am so glad you said something. I was about to stop reading it when I saw your post. I'm really glad I didn't. Once I got past the 1st story, the book got really interesting.

BTW...Cloud Atlas is not 950 pages...I do not know where I came up with that number. Its 544 pages per Wikipedia. my B.
