NW (by Zadie Smith) book discussion

February is "Non-American Authors" month:
NW by Zadie Smith (author was born in London, England) ~Set in northwest London, Zadie Smith’s brilliant tragicomic novel follows four locals—Leah, Natalie, Felix, and Nathan—as they try to make adult lives outside of Caldwell, the council estate of their childhood. In private houses and public parks, at work and at play, these Londoners inhabit a complicated place, as beautiful as it is brutal, where the thoroughfares hide the back alleys and taking the high road can sometimes lead you to a dead end. Depicting the modern urban zone—familiar to city-dwellers everywhere—NW is a quietly devastating novel of encounters, mercurial and vital, like the city itself. (416 pages)

I enjoyed the discussion. It helped me understand the book better. I appreciated the talk regarding the British slang; that definitely cleared some items up.

I completely agree! I enjoyed meeting everyone, and discussing the things that went right over my head ;)

Another great meeting everyone! While I admit I did not get into the book myself (I didn't get past the first one hundred pages to be honest), by the time I left last night I was ready to pick it back up. And I don't know how we get so lucky so often to have an "expert" of sorts available to us, but a new member came last night with a solid grasp on British slang and was able to clear up a lot of dialogue confusion for everyone.
