This book club began in 2007 in response to a gap in book clubs in the West side of the Triangle. Since then, many book clubs have emerged (on meetup, and elsewhere). We're still around, and I guess that means something is working. We alternate locations (between Chapel Hill and Durham), and for the most part, meet the last Tuesday of the month. Previously this book club had been run (and very successfully) by 4 organizers who all loved it very much. Today the title of organizer has been handed down to Beth and Jaimee who also dearly love the club and hope to keep it from dissolving. We're always looking for new members and fresh ideas in discussion.
What can you expect when you show up to book club:
There will be a discussion leader who has come prepared with questions about the book, we push our leaders to bring background information, and questions that target the themes, plots, and underlying meanings in the books we read. Our attempt is to have this more like a college classroom discussion and less like a coffee klatch
Our meetings usually last about 1.5 to 2 hours. You're free to leave early if you want, and some of us stay late to chat post meeting
We meet in restaurants and bars. The organizers enjoy a good beer with their books, and we welcome you to join us for a drink.
What do we expect from you:
Read the book, and show up ready to discuss
But it's ok if you don't finish it...just be prepared for spoilers.
We want you to participate! Let us know what you thought about the book, if you loved it, hated it, why?
If you've been a couple times, volunteer to lead discussion
Suggest titles for our club - we vote for 3 months at a time so everyone will have a current list of upcoming book choices.
Click here for more details, including the history of books we've read, books that have been suggested at meetings and the list of genres we use to choose our books. Feel free to email the organizers if you have any questions.
