Our ukulele group has been asked to perform again at this year's festival, which will be at Freedom Park! http://worldparadefestival.org/

Those of you who were participants last year remember the fun set we did (you can see video at www.carolinauke.com). We will be performing a fifteen minute set some time between 12:45 and 1:30 pm at the Bandshell.

We will meet for a final run through and warm up at the train in Freedom Park (by the playgrounds) at 11 am on festival day, and to pick up your  "Carolina Cool Hand Ukes" t-shirt if you have not done so already.  We will break for lunch from the food vendors at the festival, then reconvene by the bridge to the bandshell at 12:30 so we are ready to go when our time slot comes up.

The set list is: Drop Baby Drop,  Jamaican Farewell, Strangest Dream, Imagine, and Royals, with On the Road Again and 3 Little Birds to be added if they give us additional playing time.  You can find music in the "files" section (we will update with arrangements noted once finalized).

To learn Drop Baby Drop go to:  http://ukuleleunderground.com/2008/11/uke-lesson-11-drop-baby-drop/

To learn the uke version of Royals, go to:  http://ukulelehunt.com/2013/09/24/walk-off-the-earth-royals-chords/

Thanks so much Robby! Your wife did a great job. It is nice to have at least the two songs on record.

Special mention:Tim and Sarah, for your tireless work and hospitality. And Kamal! For adding that extra special "je ne sais quoi" to our performance with the drums.

Is there a best place to park at 11?

    April 25, 2014

    • Timothy S.

Enter main entrance off East Blvd. and drive to end of parking lot, try to get a space close to train which is beside the lot

      April 25, 2014

    • Sarah W.

The park will probably be crowded (it is supposed to be sunny and 80 degrees!), but Tim and I plan to get there early and go in the East Boulevard entrance and hopefully park by the train where we are meeting first…if the parking lots are full you can park on the street on Cumberland or Lombardy Circle and walk across…or if you want to park on the bandstand side you usually can get a spot on the street on Princeton Ave. or try parking by the Nature Museum off of Sterling (there is a foot bridge across to the park).

Don't forget to wear your Carolina Cool Hand Ukes tshirts on Saturday!! If you didn't pick it up on Thursday, I will bring it to the festival or you can stop by our house Friday evening for it.

We put a map of Freedom Park up in "Files" showing where we will meet by the playground Train at 11 am to practice, and then by the bridge to the BandShell at 12:30 to get ready for the performance.

As you know we had to eliminate a couple songs for time, and in case you missed the results of the voting from Sunday - 3 Little Birds and On the Road Again got cut. However we might have time to fit in On the Road Again at the end because it is very short. We will time our dress rehearsal.

We posted the latest version of the festival songs, with arrangements and color coding in the "Files" section of the meet up page. Let me know if you see any errors, as this is what will be in our books on festival day. Note if you left early on Wednesday that we dropped the a capella chorus of Jamaica Farewell, but are now ending Strangest Dream a cappella. (Also there is an error in the .pdf for the ending of On the Road Again - should be CFC).

Just got back into town and realized I forgot (i think) to order a shirt from you guys. Any mediums left?

    April 21, 2014

    • Sarah W.

U mentioned that you would wear a medium in that style when we were at the shop, so I went ahead and ordered one for you…couldn't leave out our designer!!

Thanks for taking the time to pull those together...guy sounded just like Chico on Drop Baby Drop

We put up revised song sheets for the festival songs - all in one .pdf and with large print (and now with all the pages - thanks Chico!). We worked out some cool ideas during the Sunday practice that we are excited to show the larger group on Wednesday - those are not yet reflected in the song sheets posted but I will update the files again after we try everything together as a group Wednesday. Wednesday is shaping up to be a great practice with almost all of us there, so it would be a good one to come to if you are still interested in playing the festival…not to mention the fact that there will be some good eats!!

We checked out the Bandshell today. Take a look at the last (2) files. Thanks.

Awesome!! You may have to do a solo set!

      April 12, 2014

Nope, Tim's better equipped. It is a nice venue to play for an audience.

We met a nice couple who are in a Reggae band that will perform at the festival, "Jahlistic". Check out their Facebook page for videos. Joel the guitarist arranged reggae versions of "Royals", and "Happy". Tanya, the singer plays ukulele (new) so I invited her to join us on stage, and on our meetup site. "Cool", she said she has never met a ukulele player in Charlotte!

Thanks Chico they did a nice job on their video

      April 12, 2014

    • Chico L.

Oops. I didn't mean to mis-represent, but I think that was Lorde doing "Royal" in the video, and Joel had mixed a reggae beat to it.

Hey yaw'll!!! Chico, Mary Jo & I went to a dinner last night and it was really fun!!! We met some really interesting people and stirred up some uke excitement!! I posted a map so you can start planning what you want to visit while we are there!!!

Hello folks. More updates. Sunu said that our time slot is close to 1:00 (ready between 12:45-1:30) right after the parade and opening ceremonies. A schedule will probably be up on the festival website by Friday. She said that the stage is the one surrounded by a pond. There are other musicians performing, but we will go on before them, with 3 microphones, and mic stands set-up. I also informed her that we won't be part of the parade, and we're just doing our stage performance.

Well, my best friend from CA will come as planned (yeah!) but unfortunately it means I can't swing it this year (boo!). We may not brave merlefest, but will be up in the mountains somewhere. So bummed!

We are in the process of choosing songs to perform at the festival. Please try to attend our practice on March 17 to give us your input. We will be trying out some songs as a group. See the Meetup "World Parade & Festival Practice" for details.
