ISC
Dear Science Field Trips Meetup Member,

Illinois Science Council is wrapping up a sassy, scintillating, science-filled year.  We're glad you could be a part of it -- enjoying audacious authors and captivating chemistry experiments.

Unlike some others, ISC values you for your mind, although we will certainly take your money and we want your body at our programs.  So please take our survey below and consider a tax-deductible contribution.

Put Your Money Where Your Mind Is! - Support a 5-year-old!

Dr. Honeydew & Beaker Experiment w/ Chocolate

Based on its "birth date" as a 501c3 nonprofit organization, Illinois Science Council is 5 years old.  As any newcomer, it started slow - first learning to crawl, then walk and talk. Now, like any 5-year-old, it has its own personality and is a lot of fun to be around.  But it still requires constant adult supervision.

ISC is crazy curious about all things science. In 2011, ISC:

  • Got a little ambitious learning about the cosmology of multiverses and quantum physics with science authors;
  • Was convinced it could handle adult things as it explored the chemistry of beer and whiskey; and,
  • Showed its playful fun side too - doing experiments with the chemistry of chocolate and honey.

To continue to grow and thrive in coming years, ISC needs you to put your money where your mind is.  Please make a tax-deductible donation to ISC today.

Make a Donation

Continuing the analogy, that could mean $10 (for kindergarten supplies) or $100 (toward its college fund).  Any amount is greatly appreciated and we promise to use it wisely!

We already know that in 2012 ISC will be getting into brains (neuroscience, not zombie food) and the science and technology of electric vehicle cars for starters.  If you have other ideas - please send them along!

Science lovers -- give us your thoughts!

We need your help shaping next year's events. So after you've made a donation (and even if you didn't), put your mind where your money is!

Do you have ideas how to make Illinois Science Council better?  Programs you want to see?  We want to hear 'em!  Please take 5 minutes to answer a few questions.  This brief survey will help us learn what programs will be of most interest to you in the upcoming year.

  Short survey - click here

SPECIAL BONUS:  Answer the survey by December 20 and your name will be entered in a drawing to win one of 2 sets of ISC coffee beakers! Two winners will be announced via Facebook, so please

Chemistry of... Culminates with Caffeine (at least for 2011)
Fun with Chemistry of Honey
We've had great fun with our Chemistry of... series honoring 2011 as International Year of Chemistry.  (Check out the videos below.)

Everyone who attended a program got to conduct actual chemistry experiments themselves, smell and taste things, make friends, have fun and get a little smarter for the time well spent.  (Better than an evening of reality TV!)

We got to explore and experiment with:

Chemistry of BEER with Metropolitan Brewery  (see YouTube video here)
Chemistry of WHISKEY with Koval Distillery
Chemistry of COSMETICS with Chemist's Corner (see YouTube video here)
Chemistry of CHOCOLATE with Blommer Chocolate Company (see YouTube video here)
Chemistry of HONEY with Notebaert Nature Museum
Chemistry of COFFEE with Intelligentsia Coffee  (see YouTube video here)

We raise our beaker to Dr. Shelby Hatch of Northwestern University for contributing her time, brains, experience and all around great attitude to this effort.  It couldn't have happened without her.  Also a big cheer and thank you to our collaborating partners.  They show how science is happening every day in Chicago companies all around us in ways we never stop to consider.

With a little encouragement (or perhaps sponsorship) ISC may offer repeats, or new programs in 2012 to continue the fun.

Sometime I think we're alone in the universe, and sometimes I think we're not. In either case the idea is quite staggering.

My goal is simple. It is complete understanding of the universe, why it is as it is and why it exists as all.

I'm astounded by people who want to 'know' the universe when it's hard enough to find your way around Chinatown.

Physics is like sex: sure, it may give some practical results, but that's not why we do it.

Creationism is not a scientific alternative to natural selection any more than the stork theory is an alternative to sexual reproduction.
