Show Us Your Stuff; Tell Us Your Challenges

Thank you to Noah Helfand from FirstData for his instructive tour in March through the channels of payment processors, channels, gateways and merchants!

Join us on Tuesday, April 8, 2014, 7PM for a pop up session, "Show Us Your Stuff; Tell Us Your Challenges." This is a great opportunity to network by:

Showing us what you have been working on
• Sharing your favorite new design/development tool(s)
• Sharing training or conference opportunities for web professionals
• Get collective advice on a challenge you are facing in your work
• Job opportunities or collaborations you would like to invite people into

I will have my laptop set up and ready to go so you can show your work on the presentation screen, show a tool or take us wherever you need to go on the internet. This is INFORMAL... no preparation needed. Your willingness to make your needs known or to show off your work is all you need to bring!

We'll meet for the second time at Firehouse Grill, 750 Chicago Avenue in Evanston, one block south of the Main Street Purple Line EL stop.

Happy Spring and see you Tuesday at the Firehouse for a beer and whatever you'd like to do for dinner!

Really enjoyed meeting everyone. There were questions about how the ecommerce piece for my two Wordpress charity sites were done. Because the main charity site already had a store, we turned over the ecommerce piece to that developer to tie into existing store. I simply provided a layered photoshop file of what I wanted the store to look like and they followed that format very well. The store is at http://store.teamboomer.org/ I created all the illustrations for the products since we didn't have all the products available to shoot.

This was a good chance to re-connect in a smaller group setting and see a representative sampling of the victories and challenges that are met with every day on the web by designers / developers in the group.

Wow, home already. To think I used to need lifts to and from this MeetUp. So, definitely thanks for finding a venue near the Purple Line L and the Metra line. Also, a special thanks for the opportunity to not only say "this is what I do" but also actually show people what I can do. I worked on this still-ongoing "worksearch" web project since April 2013, stored most of the code on GitHub (https://github.com/jephmann) since last August, and urged everyone on an almost daily basis at LinkedIn and elsewhere to view and constructively critique my code, finished or not. This MeetUp was the very first time I showed this project to people and discussed it with anyone. I am especially grateful to this group for bearing with my stammering and other dentally-affected mannerisms. I've been off the MeetUp circuit for a long while (and the recent Polar Vortexes didn't help); so here's hoping I can do more of these again.

A very impressive application, Jeffrey. Show that baby around!

While I still remember: there seemed to be a side discussion about low-cost web-hosting services. This is not necessarily an endorsement as I only found out about this at another MeetUp last night regarding Ruby coding. Nitrous.IO (https://www.nitrous.io/) is a cloud service for developing projects using Ruby/Rails, Go, Node.js, Python/Django or PHP. In the case of Ruby, if you (like me) had trouble installing Ruby on your computer, it may be easier to try developing via this site, where among other things you would install the Gems. (The catch: an hour after that MeetUp ended, the site went down overnight for maintenance, but issues were resolved by morning.) So Nitrous.IO may be worth a try; it seems free until you run out of space.

Many thanks to the presenters... Elliot, Jeffrey, Kay, Dennis and Steve. This showcase of work is most impressive. We have a really talented community and it was great to see some good work. Let's do this again!

Aaaargh. I'm down with a bad cold. I don't think this is something you'd like me to share with you. Though, If I was there, I'd show you Rickbayless.com. We just went live this week! Kudos to the designer Michael Carr. I'm sure Steve will show you the site he designed and that I worked on also. Great job Steve! Sorry I can't be there.

Mulling 4/8/2013 over. It would be nice for me to discuss a work in progress on my GitHub account as well as discuss my main challenge of having a career at all.

If the presenter doesn't show, I suggest we offer the stage for anyone who wants to present recent work? We haven't done a show & tell for a while!

    • Steve S.

Great idea Elliot, but standby just a day. I'll be sending an announcement before the end of the week.

Is that right? Is the Firehouse the new venue for CWPMU?

    March 24

    • Steve S.

Hey Dennis. Yes, we'll be at the Firehouse, but no confirmation for a presenter just yet.
