Web Typography

Web typography has been largely ignored in the past because of the restrictions of having to use the same 8 "web safe" fonts all the time. In the last few years that has changed dramatically. Many fonts are now available from a variety of sources, making typography a must know skill for any web designer.

Join us as Steve Starr gives us a brief history on Typography and how it can affect and enhance your designs. Becky Davis will then talk about the different font services available now and how you can easily incorporate a large variety of fonts into your web pages.

I would also like to gather example sites that use interesting typography. If you know of any good ones, please email [masked], so I can put together a nice list.

As usual, both of these presenters gave VERY nice presentations.
Always more interested in the "how-to's" than "why's" - especially in this case, due to a long rich history of type design - but great to learn more about getting new fonts into web. Thank you, Steve and Becky!

Glad everyone enjoyed this session. I have updated my demo file with a couple of the extra resources we found last night. You can find that file at http://beckydavisdesign.com/fonts/. All of the CSS is in the header so you can see what's being done. Have fun!

Topic I'd love to see covered at this meetup.
For years (ever), been told to use sans-serif fonts for web; better readability. Increasingly lately, I'm seeing more & more sites use serif fonts (ex. latest Boston Globe redesign - http://bostonglobe.com) Is this due to the increase in mobile users/higher resolution? And if this is the case, is the direction to design for mobile first, not only for layout & content, but typography?
