Thematic Games (Mount Prospect, IL)

What’s this meetup about?

We’re a small group of gamers who get together once a month to play board games for a few hours. Sunday has worked best as far as day where we’re able to shirk normal responsibilities for a time. Football season is over, so really, what else is there to do on a Sunday afternoon?

What’s a Thematic Game?

Mostly what this means is we like games that tell a story. A broad definition is a game where the mechanics of the game are in service to the theme. This distinction is made generally in contrast to a Euro game, where the mechanics are most important.

OK, sounds interesting.

We definitely would love to have new faces at the table. The one thing we ask is to try to RSVP ahead of time. We attempt to plan games that we are going to be playing, and one extra player can throw those plans for a loop, but we’ll try to make it work. Hopefully we get enough people interested where we don't have to worry about this.

We’ll be playing in the back room of the store, typically at one of the low tables. Look for a sign that says Thematic Games Meetup.

I haven’t played X game / I’d like to play Y game

We’re willing to teach or learn. If you’d like to get something to the table, suggest it in the comments!

Ideas for 5 players - Alien Frontiers, Race for the Galaxy, Ascension (with an expansion mixed in), Magic the Gathering free-for-all, Glory to Rome, Elder Sign, Lords of Waterdeep, Cosmic Encounter, Epic Spell Wars, Cutthroat Caverns. I also have Caverna, have read the rules, and would like to get it to the table, but that would be a first play. Dark Gothic looks like it will play 5.

      Eclipse?

I don't have a lot of thematic for 5 I would subject newcomers to. Mine would be oldies - Kremlin, Illuminati or for a quick laugh' nuclear war - the comical card game of nuclear destruction. Always like alien frontiers, interested in dark Gothic. Would love to play Eclipse if you think it's appropriate for the group.

Any thoughts for this time? Had fun playing Dungeon Lords recently. Wouldn't mind giving Dungeon Petz a go.

Glad you liked Dungeon Lords. I'd be up for Petz. I've also been craving an old school dudes on a map game too - nexus ops, fortress america, buck rogers, etc. I don't know if you guys like those kind of games.

I have Conquest of Nerath that I would like to get to the table, but that game plays exactly 4. By the time this next weekend rolls around, I should have my copy of Princes of the Dragon Throne, which is a combo of deck building and area control. I'll play anything, though...

I started the group because there wasn't any other type of group like this. I've met some great folks in the group who have become close friends and have also met some amazing business owners.
