Thematic Games

We meet once a month to play games with a strong theme.

What does that mean? A low probability of playing a game about medieval farming or trading in the Mediterranean, or using wooden cubes. And a higher probability of playing a game with Orcs, or Laser Beams, or Orcs with Laser Beams, throwing fistfuls of dice, hundreds of plastic miniatures and Byzantine rulebooks that would put the IRS to shame. Or as one of the attendees put it - "People who play games that we think will be fun"

We've typically been playing an epic length game one month followed by shorter games the next month.

New players welcome! A lot of the times we're running a first play-through of a game. Feel free to suggest games to play in the comments. We're happy to teach or learn.

Some games that we've played in recent months - Descent, the World of Warcraft Board Game, Rune Wars, Dominion, Ascension, and Thunderstone.

Don, when would you want to start?

We played with 6 players and I think that was the max (at least without expansions...not sure if it is more with the expansions), and a good number to play with. The dynamic of the game would really be shifted playing with any different number of players.

I think battle star is meant for larger groups to have the most fun. Don't own a copy but would be willing to play if anyone has it! Really looking to see how Eclipse plays, been waiting since I bought it to give it a try! It only has 9 rounds so there is an end to the game. Doesn't go on and on so hopefully we can be done before you have to leave.

Hopefully we don't get more than 6 players so we can all sit around the same table and enjoy the game together! Sound selfish I know but I enjoy playing with our group and hate splitting up and missing out playing with you guys!

I believe we need to allow at least one hour per player for our first game. So depending on how many players we get you should plan accordingly. I always get there early to shop anyway, so if people want to start earlier let me know. People should also look up the rules to get a sense of the gameplay, there are many options of what could be done on your turn that having a sense of how they work might help in the long run.

BoardGameGeek.com says it takes 120 minutes. Therefore it should take us 3-4 hours. lol. I think I need to leave by 5:30 this time. Does anyone want to start early in order to get a chance at getting two games in or play other games?

I missed Supernova. Apparently it sold out in under an hour... We'll see how many players we get. The one thing is that I think we'll need to arrange for two tables. The game looks like it takes up a lot of space.

I was going to suggest RSVP at 6, since neither of us has played this yet so there may be a learning curve to the game when trying to run it. We'll see how many people are interested in playing first! Were you able to get the Supernova Expansion? I have it but haven't looked into it yet. There is also talk of another expansion-Rise of The Ancients! I'll have to pre order when it becomes available.

This month we're meeting a week later than normal due to Games Plus' spring auction.

For this month's game, we're joining the cult of the new (ish) and playing Eclipse. Conquer the galaxy in an afternoon! We'll have at least two copies of the game, which seats up to 6, so I'm setting the attendance limit to 12.
