Spooky Bike Ride to Sycamore Pumpkin Festival (Larry)

Don't put the bike away for the season just yet! Join us for a ride along the Great Western Trail for a visit to the Sycamore Pumpkin Festival. Our ride begins at the Great Western Trailhead in Leroy Oakes Forest Preserve in St Charles. From there, we will ride about 20 miles on the trail to the DeKalb County Courthouse in downtown Sycamore, where thousands of decorated pumpkins will be on display.

http://www.sycamorepumpkinfestival.com/schedule.htm

We will have lunch in Sycamore, with many food vendors at the Pumpkin Festival as well as a few restaurants to choose from. We will also be in Sycamore in time for the Pumpkin Festival Parade that starts at 1 PM. The Great Western Trail has a crushed limestone surface, so a bike with wider tires is recommended. We will also ride about 1 mile on roads as we enter the town of Sycamore. Total of about 40 miles for the ride. Leroy Oakes Forest Preserve is located on Dean Street on the west side of St Charles, about one-half mile west of Randall Road. The parking lot for the Great Western Trail is located on the left (south) side of the street if you are coming from Randall Road.

Please plan to arrive by 10:00 AM. We will push-off promptly at 10:30 AM. 10:00 Gather at Leroy Oakes Forest Preserve in St. Charles 10:30 Depart for Sycamore 1:00 Arrive in Sycamore.... We will lock our bikes up by the post office.... In Sycamore.... Break off into groups for: Watching the parade (starts at 1:00), Lunch (local restaurants or booths at the festival--your choice), walk around the town square viewing the pumpkins.... 2:30 Gather at the post office and get ready to ride back to St. Charles 2:45 Ride back to St. Charles 5:30ish Arrive in St. Charles It usually takes longer to ride to Sycamore than it does to return due to winds.... The ride there is pretty much straight west (usually a headwind) and the return trip is pretty much straight east (usually a tailwind)....

Transportation/Parking

There is plenty of parking at Leroy Oakes....

The legs stay the warmest, and Roger thinks his legs are his best feature.

Hey, on a cyclist, legs ARE our best feature.

Thanks to everyone who showed up!!!! The weather was great (which has not always been the case for this ride)!!!! The festival was a blast as usual!!!! The company was GREAT!!!! The "experimental" portion of the ride worked out well.... (I did set a lap on my Garmin, so I have exact distances to plan for the shorter ride for next year....) And shoutouts t: o Jim B for his help in setting up the shorter route!!!! Steve Levinthal for "leading" the shorter route and the SAG support!!!! Bob and Roger for their assistance with sweeping!!!! If it weren't for you, who come out for these rides, it
wouldn't be fun for me to lead them.... SO A HUGE THANK YOU TO ALL OF YOU!!!!

Hi Larry! Thanks for doing this! I am interested in the SHORTER milage route(16 total)? that another member suggested though...do you have details on where to meet and catch up with you stronger longer distance riders? Thanks...(yes, I know I'm a wussy!)

    October 25, 2013

  • Alice

Larry could there be an option to meet the group half way? Around 10-12 miles away from Sycamore?

    October 7, 2013

    • Larry G

If a few people want to start there, that is fine with me.... I just ask that you let me know so we are not waiting for you in St. Charles.... If the alternate spot works without any issues then I will post it as an alternative for this ride in the future....

Yes, I'm the tedious person with no current car. If anyone is open to give me a lift, that would be wonderful. I don't take up much space, and of course would pitch in for gas.

BY POPULAR DEMAND!!!! YOU ASKED FOR IT AND YOU GOT IT!!!!

A shorter (but very experimental) version of this popular annual ride has been posted.... If you are still planning to do the long version PLEASE DON'T RSVP for the other ride.... If you are planning on doing the other ride, PLEASE CANCEL YOUR RSVP FOR THIS RIDE WHEN YOU SIGN UP FOR THE SHORTER RIDE.... This way, we all have an accurate head count for each location and we aren't looking for people who aren't going to be there or are already there.... THANKS!!!!

Here is the link for the shorter ride....

This is not a hard ride - it's a converted rail bed, so very level. You actually want it on the chilly side, as you will be plenty warm enough as you pedal - best to wear a thin fleece under a wind breaking jacket. If you have long bicycle tights, wear those, and bring some wind breaking leggings just in case. Focus on keeping the wind out, not on bulking up.
