Hello Everyone! What a beautiful day it was for riding (and anything else) today; hope everyone got out and rode or did something. As for the weather tomorrow, it's 2 for 2 and we're gonna have another beautiful day, albiet slightly cooler and partly cloudy, but wonderful for cycling all the same. Remember to wear wicking synthetics and not cotton, and that includes undergarments, gloves, hats, etc., to keep moisture away. A light jacket and gloves to walk the Garden grounds is advisible if you run cold, especially if the sun isn't out half the time. The wind is not expected to be as gusty as today and will shift from NNW in the a.m. to NNE in the p.m., 7mph for our start and 5mph as we finish.

Timetable of Events (Gathering and departing times are firm; others are approximate) 09:30 am: Gathering time 10:00 am: Departing time 10:50 am: ETA Harms Woods (see below for location) 12:00 pm: ETA Chicago Botanic Garden 12-02 pm: Lunch & enjoying gardens 02:00 pm: Depart Botanic Garden 02:40 pm: ETA back at Harms Woods 04:00 pm: Arrival at Caldwell Woods
Ride Pace This depends upon who shows, but the pace will be slow - moderate (12mph average). Gary will lead a faster group if the need arises. Tailwinds and downhills will mean faster paces while headwinds and uphills will mean slower paces. There are only two small climbs (one's a little longer than the other, but nothing to be concerned about), so this is basically a flat trail. Enjoyment of fall's gifts and each other is the focus, but if there's a faster group, we will split off in which case I will sweep both groups. If we end up missing anyone planning to join us at Harms Woods, just text me and we can plan to meet up at the Garden for lunch and the ride back if you wish.
Trail Surface(s) The entire trail is paved, so all bikes will work.
About the Ride/Mileage We will be picking up the North Branch Trail (NBT) at Devon & Caldwell at the 0 mile mark. According to the map link I provided, the round-trip mileage is approximately 30 miles, give or take a few 1/10s of a mile. For those preferring less mileage (roughly 15 miles from this point out 'n' back), feel free to meet up with us at Harms Woods in Glenview at the northwest corner of Golf Road and Harms Woods Road (see "North Branch Trail (North) map
here). Contact me on my cell that morning to make arrangements for us to pick you up and continue on to the Garden. I will email my cell number the evening before the ride to those who will be attending.
Location We're meeting at the Caldwell Woods trailhead free parking lot at the corner of Devon & Caldwell, Chicago, IL. My many thanks to Gary Chuven for not only providing the map I posted showing the location of the Edgebrook Metra station, but for informing me that there is street parking along Caldwell, Lehigh and Central; there are parking lots at the train station and at Devon & Central; and, most importantly, that there is a $BUX on the NW corner of Devon & Central. ;) We will be riding to the Chicago Botanic Garden located at 1000 Lake-Cook Road, Glencoe, IL, but will be biking into the south service entrance on Dundee Road.
Transportation/Parking Parking at the Caldwell Woods trailhead is free and there are washrooms. Public transportation to the trailhead and from Chicago Botanic Garden is available via
Metra's Milwaukee District/North Line (M-DN) and the CTA bus and train lines. JD pointed me toward this
Google Maps Route Planner for foot, car, public trans and bicycle. ***Be sure to check the public trans schedules so you're sure to make your necessary connections. If you need to stay longer or leave earlier than our approximate 1:30p departure time from the Garden, feel free, as we needn't leave as a group. If for some reason you aren't able to bike back from the Garden with us, there are Metra trains leaving from the Lake-Cook station at 1:29p and 3:29p (as well as several times later throughout the evening) that arrive 21 minutes later at the Edgebrook station near the Caldwell Woods.***
Carpooling Please indicate in the "Comments" section with your RSVP if you are interested in carpooling so you can make arrangements with others.
What Should I Bring? Tuned-up bike, helmet, water/snacks, etc., lock, photo ID; and the following recommended stuff: spare inner tube, portable air pump (or CO2 cartridges), tire levers, sunscreen (important even on a cloudy day), lock, cash (for emergencies and lunch), cell phone, Medic Alert ID (if applicable), and insurance card.
Waiver/Helmet Rule Each rider, whether a member of Chicagoland Cycling Meetup, must sign a waiver prior to each ride (posted in the "Files" section) and all riders must wear a helmet for the duration of the ride.
When We Get To The Garden Noon projected arrival time will be at the Garden south entrance on Dundee Road. A large red sign greets you. Bike entry is free and biking is allowed on the west perimeter at a speed limit of 7mph. I like to take some pics on my ride up to the visitor's center where we must rack our bikes prior to entering the gardens. There are other racks located on the grounds as well if you prefer to rack elsewhere. For those who want to lunch there,
here's the eateries info. I'd like to browse a
