Welcome to the CBG Monthly Windy City Rides!

We will meet at the parking lot on McCormick Blvd. that is SOUTH of Dempster Street. This location has facilities and a couple of picnic tables. The ride will depend on the wind direction. If there is a North wind, we will ride up to Central Avenue and Green Bay Road in Highland Park. If there is a South wind, we will ride down to North Avenue Beach in Chicago. Either roundtrip is about 24 miles.

The ride direction will be announced at the Meetup; it will be based on that morning's 9AM weather report.

Plan on a 12-14 mph pace. We can split into "faster" and "slower" groups if the ride is large enough. Much of either route includes street riding.  There are food places and a bike shop at either halfway point.

The ride will proceed as long as there is no active rain...

Helmets and signed waivers are absolutely necessary.

What to bring with you:

1. A bicycle in good working order. Almost any type of bicycle will do. Remember to properly fill the tires with air. And bring a spare tube...

2. Filled water bottles.

3. An energy bar, or similar.

4. A helmet.

5. A bicycle lock.

6. ID card.

7. Some money for food, etc. if desired.

8. Sun screen.

9. Sun glasses.

Most important, bring enthusiasm!

yes it was chilly but I warmed up and the company was great. I will ride with this group again. I now know how to get to the lakeshore on a bike from Skokie. I vote for residential city streets or suburbaan bike paths. I've had enough bike accidents in my life time! Praying for spring to get here and STAY!!!!!

Cloudy until just before the ride, then sunny and beautiful. Interesting route, super people to ride with, good leader. I had a great time.

Congratulations to the 14 intrepid riders who turned out on this bold, brisk, and windy day! We toured some parts of the Chicago north-side that were new to some.

Hi Jeanne, I am in Bartlett and would like to car pool. We can talk about details soon.

I plan on wearing a DayGlo orange vest so drivers will think I'm a road worker. Hit one and you get 12 years in the can.

  • Nancy

I'm a maybe since I am not comfortable with street riding.

    1 · April 3, 2013

    • Gary C.

It will be OK with so many riders... You can ride on the inside of the pack, unless you want to be the Leader Of The Pack!

      1 · April 4, 2013

    • Nancy

Thanks Gary! LOL No, I don't think you would want me to be leading.

anyone who wants to ride in the open street with hundreds of others then go to critical mass!!!

    April 3, 2013

  • max

Hey Nancy. totally agree!!i always try to stay as far away from cars as i can. i don't want to get hit so bike lanes as much as possible!

    depends on weather!

As of right now I think I should be able to make it!

ID card is for safety. if u have an accident & r unconscious & go to hospital. it is NOT to identify u for any other reason. u can write down all ur personal info. esp. medical on any card/piece of paper. :)

I echo Max's comment on ID cards...As someone who has ridden for years both rode and mountain biking, I would never ride without one. (Oh yeah, I am also in healthcare and have seen several patients come into the ED with head injuries from cycling). Always ride with a helmet (and yes an ID card)!

      February 12, 2013

    • Gary C.

I also have Road ID. Nevertheless, a state ID of some sort just might come in handy...

Question: Are these rides for hard-core bikers with super-rides or "medium-core" like myself and my rather clunky hybrid? I'm new. Thanks.

    February 21, 2013

    • Gary C.

Fun rides; they are "no drop" rides.

      February 21, 2013

  • Gary C.

Margie: we do not know. That depends on who wants to ride faster, how many, who is in shape, how stiff is the head-wind, etc. These are no-drop fun rides, with many different levels of riders, and I do not restrict anyone from attending. There will be a sweeper at the tail end of the group; that person's job is to keep everyone in front of him/her.

    February 13, 2013

  • Gary C.

Kelly: 24 miles round trip. Each route is about 24 miles, and the wind direction determines which ride to do. Usually, if there are some riders who cannot maintain the 12-14mph (including stops) pace, they will go at a slower pace. If there are some roadrunners who want to go faster, that's OK also. As ride leader, I try to stay with the advertived pace group.

    February 13, 2013

  • kelly W.

What's the faster pace? This is 48 miles then round trip or 24?

    February 13, 2013

  • Rachel

Can't wait for the ride. Hopefully we will have good weather.

    February 12, 2013

  • Fong

    Is an ID card necessary?

    February 12, 2013

    • Gary C.

As explained earlier, it is not absolutely necessary, but it is a good idea to have. Just in case... I always have some ID with me, even if I am only tooling around the neighborhood.

      February 12, 2013

  • kelly W.

Oh are u signing up again for Michigan century ride again?

This is ~30 miles from me... if I'm in the century sort of mood I may attend - now I'll stay on the fence =)

It is a SUGGESTED list.... Personally, I would NEVER ride without an ID on me.... With the ID, I would also carry a copy of my insurance card....
