Local Fall Nuts - Harvesting & Prep

Instructor: Patricia Armstrong

Late summer and early fall are the times to collect your yearly supply of nuts. Learn how to identify the plants producing edible nuts in our area. View, crack open and taste local nuts and learn how Native Americans prepared flour from acorns. Nuts are the other main ingredient (besides dried berries) in pemmican, so be sure to register for both this and the Pemmican class in October.

Wow did I learn a lot. I am amazed at how much preparation Pat does for these classes. She had a baggie for all the students full of local nuts she harvested and that were taught in class, and had rocks and a hammer so they could crack them and taste. Around the table were bags of a larger selection of nuts with note cards full of information, plus profile pages of the trees.

Pat always leaves time at the end of class for students to get to know each other, share knowledge, ask her questions, or delve further into study with all of her materials (books, specimens, profile pages).

Pat's presentation was great! She offered a lot of descriptions and tree characteristics to help us ID local nut-bearing trees (and hazelnut shrubs) in the field.

I started the group because there wasn't any other type of group like this. I've met some great folks in the group who have become close friends and have also met some amazing business owners.
