Sustainable Wood Harvest - At Kings Hill Farm

  • Mar 3, 2012 · 6:00 PM
  • Kings Hill Farm

Based on the feedback I have received from the group (nobody RSVPing), I've moved the date back so that it's Saturday to Sunday. Hopefully that should work better with everyone's schedules...

If you have any thoughts about what would make this event better just let me know. I rely on the group to help keep me in line!

We’re heading up to Kings Hill Farm, Saturday March 3, 6pm untill Sunday March 4, 3pm.

On Sunday after a tour of the farm, we’ll harvest building material for a future natural building workshop. Then, the main tasks that we will be doing would be to move logs by hand and then debark them. There will be rotating stations to let everyone get a feel for each of the tasks involved with prepping a tree into building materials. (except chainsawing)

The cost is $20 and will include Dinner, Breakfast, Lunch - Farm Meals with a vegan option, using as much ingredients from the farm or nearby farms as possible. Various varieties of potatoes, beets and parsnips will be available for purchase, as well as Chicken Eggs and Duck Eggs, possibly even Goose Eggs!!

Bunkrooms will available with a maximum of 12 beds. We have a lot of floor space and would be up for a slumber party!! It may be a bit nippy out but if you are up for camping, you are welcome to! Either way, make sure to bring a sleeping bag and a pillow.

If you need or can offer a ride just post in the comments below. If we get 20+ people who would like to organize a shuttle, Jai can help us set that up.

There are hotels and bed and breakfasts in the area. Meals are provided as stated. If you would like assistance in making lodging reservations at a nearby location or to secure your space at one of the events or workshop, please contact Jai at[masked] or [masked] Kings Hill farm is located at 19370 Highway G Mineral Point, WI 53565. If you have any questions you can also call Milton at 773.789.8887.

This was simply an incredible meet up. I learned so much from Joel and Jai, and of course from everyone who was present. Getting outside in the fresh air, farm fresh meals, learning, conversation, and coming home with potatoes, beets, and goose and duck eggs... who could ask for more? Thanks so much to all those who made this possible. I feel so happy after attending :-)

I'll have some room in my car coming back on Sunday if anyone needs a ride back to Chicago.

    Hi,
Sorry not to be able to join, it sure sounds like a fine adventure! Did something similar at at the Strawbale Studio in Oxford, MI. Very rewarding to harvest and build in a sustainable way! http://www.strawbalestudio.org/
And for the folks going to Veroqua you might be seeing one Roald Gunderson's buildings. He is a remarkable architect in that area. visit http://www.wholetreesarchitecture.com/ Hope that you all have a great trip!

Jacob, unless someone joins us in the next week, your main options might be to ride with Bill on Friday or take a bus out to Rockford to meet Jonna. Perhaps Bill could give you a ride back to the city...

Hello. I'm interested in going, but would need a ride. I live in Wicker Park. Anyone leaving from Chicago? Look forward to meeting you all!

I will be in Rockford at the Gardening for Food and Fun conference presented by U of I Extension on Saturday during the day, 8am-4pm. I'm driving from there up to King's Hill and will probably arrive right around 6pm. If anyone needs a ride from the Rockford area, I am happy to drive. Or, if anyone needs a ride home on Sunday to the western suburbs (I live in Aurora) or anywhere along the way, you are welcome to ride with me.

I'm in Edgewater. I'll send you an email to discuss the details.

I think that is possible. Where from Chicago exactly?

    February 16, 2012

Karen, the open house in Viroqua starts at noon Fri and is 5 hrs away. So I'd like to leave Chicago by around 6 am to give us some time for pit stops... just let me know.

Hi Bill. I am interested in checking out those aforementioned sights with you. With you doing the driving, it sounds like a sweet deal! Let me check if I am available that Friday.

I'm thinking about attending an open house of a Passive House prototype in Viroqua, WI Fri afternoon, and staying near Spring Green, WI that night. Then doing a tour of Taliesin (Frank Lloyd Wright home) Sat morning before heading down to Kings Hill Farm that afternoon. Is anyone interested in joining me? I can drive.

Who all needs a ride, who has space? I know that Charletta, Maria, and her friend will all need rides at this point...

It would start at 6pm. Basically it's a come the evening before, work and tour Sunday morning, leave mid-afternoon kind of event. I'll be heading up after work and probably won't be there until 8pm or so.

I have at least 2 spaces for people if you're interested in carpooling.

I would love to attend, but I am already going there for an internship for a number of months. Although it would be quite fun! I encourage others to check out this wonderful place.
