CSC Swale Building Perma-Blitz

November 18th through 20th members of the Center for Sustainable Community of Stelle, Illinois, Hayden, Ernest, & Megan, will be hosting their first Perma-Blitz. if you would like to get experience in building swales & creating a passive irrigation system for medium-sized gardens, then this is the Perma-Blitz for you!!

This seems like the last break of warm weather we are going to have for the year, so here is the agenda:

Have a cozy dinner Sunday night with Hayden, Megan, & Ernest and relax with a game of Taboo or your favorite Permaculture book.

After breakfast, go over basic design and begin with the Perma-Blitz

Come in for lunch and enjoy salad and potato soup made from scratch with CSC garden veggies.

Back to Perma-Blitzing (we gotta get these swales level, folks!)

Enjoy the sunset and work of a hard day and stay for Monday Night Dinner and spend some time with folks that you may have met during one of the past Midwest Permaculture Courses (suggested $5 donation)

Everyone is welcome to stay for one more evening and do it all again on Tuesday, that is why it is called a Perma-Blitz!!

That is the basic schedule. Now here are some of the fine details and guidelines:

We have a spare room with a futon mattress on the floor and couches in the living room. Also depending on interest we can slumber party it and provide some spaces on our comfy and spacious living room / dining room floor. We can accommodate 4 people quite comfortably and if everyone agrees we can accommodate 2 more folks either on the floor or (if we have some brave winter campers) in the back yard. A Stelle resident and CSC member Ed Homier is also offering space in their spare bedroom.

There is space for about 6 more folks in the day if they are not wanting to not stay over night; meals will still be included. Our home will still be available for bathroom, breaks, resting, & reading whether or not you are staying overnight.

Meals included are as follows: Sunday dinner, Monday breakfast/lunch/dinner, Tues breakfast/lunch/dinner. Since there is no cost for the Perma-Blitz we are asking that anyone interested in bringing food for us to cook up for the group to please do so and we will create a meal with it. We would love to partake in local food brought from your communities. We will also need a couple volunteers that would like to help with the cooking and meal clean up. Please call or email if you wish to provide help with the food! [masked] 815 (-) 256 (-) 2252

If you would only like to attend the first half or the second half of the Perma-Blitz please feel free to let us know ahead of time so that we can still work out the accommodations needed for the group. [masked] 815 (-) 256 (-) 2252
Email or Call Ernest Rando to sign up. [masked] 815 (-) 256 (-) 2252 Include the words CSC Swale Building Perma-Blitz in the subject of the email please!!

Bring one can of food that you processed this fall and trade it with someone else. Bring 2 or 3 to trade and have extras to gift away!

Thanks everyone for responding and commenting. Just a quick update we are going to be building Hugelkulture Swaled beds. We have 2 beds that we plan on basically going to turn into plant guilds, so the Perennial plants will be designed in for long term stability of the bed and hopefully we will be able to transplant in some annual plants through the season. But first the plan is to on Monday build a 15 by 20 foot hugelkulture Keyhole garden bed with the bottom of the keyhole level. We are hoping that if the bottoms of these beds are on contour that instead of our usual complex menage of hoses we can just direct a spout to the swale, let it flood, and then let the wood soak up the water. So that is the plan for now, looks as if we will have the people Monday to get the Keyhole bed done. We still have overnight accommodations if it makes it easier for anyone traveling.

Thanks for your time and look forward to seeing some of you soon!
