What brings you to the group?

I'm hoping to pair my book learning and personal observations of nature with hands-on learning experiences shared, in the company people who are excited about the same things. I've been searching for a healthy community for a while now, and the creation of that is what permaculture is about! I'm hoping to pick up a thing or two about garden design, grafting, animal husbandry, (human and animal) waste handling, and anything else that comes my way.

What is your experience with permaculture?

It's regrettably mostly limited to book learning and interaction with people who've been involved for some time now. I am getting pretty solid where plant identification is concerned, and I spend a lot of time reading about and trying to incorporate into my daily life the native plants of North America.

Are there any skills/knowledge you could share? What are they?

I am serious about plant taxonomy, and as a result I know a thing or two about plant relationships and human uses. Though I haven't really integrated this with permaculture lingo yet, I think plant guilds and other concepts should come fairly naturally. I also have read a great deal about phytochemistry and some unorthodox, specialized plant techniques, including the formation of graft-chimeras, chromosomal duplication with colchicine, the induction of hairy root cultures as well as the more field oriented prescription burn and water storing and recycling techniques.

Introduction

Hi there! My name's Josh or Joshua, and I'm just starting graduate program in plant sciences and (with any luck) ethnobotany at UIC. I'm interested in ecological transformation of cities and the rediscovering of neglected and/or native resources.
