This is one of our most popular trips each summer!
This will be an overnight camping trip on the lower portion of the Wisconsin River - between Sauk City and Spring Green - this stretch is 24 miles - over the course of two days, this should leave plenty of time for hiking or swimming along the way.
We will camp on an island or sandbar Saturday night (also known as primitive camping) so you will need to be self sufficient with camping equipment including tent, sleeping bag, stove, food, etc. You must be able to carry all of your equipment in your boat! For this reason, recreational kayaks and/or sit on tops are not advised. Canoes are also welcome on this trip, but be advised if you bring a canoe and load it up with beer coolers and firewood, you may have a hard time keeping up with a group of kayaks. We keep a leisurely pace, but have had issues in the past with overloaded boats falling behind. Speaking of beer, NO GLASS is allowed on the river and there are heavy fines for violations.
We will not be coordinating with an outfitter on this trip, so Saturday morning will involve a car shuttle (about an hour round trip.) If you do not have your own boat but would like to join the trip, renting from Rutabaga in Madison is a good option:
I plan to camp in or near Madison on Friday night, so if you are interested we can try to coordinate campsites for Friday, too.
