The Scala group is not alone in struggling to find topics and speakers for monthly meetings. Given the competition and fragmentation in our field and the pressures of our jobs, monthly may just be too frequent.

Several months ago I suggested (below) that some groups should consider a bi-monthly or quarterly meeting schedule, and that multiple groups can coordinate their dates and meeting site. Our C/C++ Users' Group is eager to cooperate, and the Chicago ACM Chapter, which is also struggling, might revive local SIGPLAN to help provide a framework.

The Scala group, like other local language-oriented organizations, is having trouble finding programs for a monthly meeting. The C/C++ Users' Group faced the issue, concluding that monthly is just too frequent a schedule, except perhaps for very new technologies. We've gone to a quarterly schedule, understanding that we can always announce an extra meeting if an opportunity arises to get a major speaker.

The Java group seems to be having similar problems, and has fallen back on vendor presentations for many of its meetings.

Might the Scala group be interested in joining us to coordinate our schedules, perhaps under a local SIGPLAN umbrella? We might try to negotiate arrangements for a monthly shared meeting site, where two, three, or four groups could alternate. I know colleagues who'd attend all of them.

If this idea interests you, let's get together soon to discuss it.
